I'm starting a new topic for what was shared within the "Roald Dahl's children's books" topic.

A publisher discontinuing reprints is considered a "ban" now?

That surprises me because it seems to be pulling the word to cover a standard practice that happens for an unimaginable number of reasons.

I think the real story is in what this situation shows about publishing, specifically on who controls derivative works. The discontinuation of the story matters because publishing rights will not revert to Don Rosa. The characters belong to The Walt Disney Company. Rosa is only one of many creators of Scrooge McDuck stories. He needs permission to release that last chapter of the story he wrote, and for whatever reason, he isn't getting it.

He'll have to create his own characters and story world to publish anything more about a billionaire or Scottish-Americanish duck.

Welll, remember the hubbub about the Seuss estate choosing to discontinue certain stories and everyone declaring them "being banned."
This has a similar ring, yet different in the fact that it is the rights holder who is asserting that the story won't continue, regardless of what the author wants.

In related news... did you know that giving any Disney book to a grade school student on public school grounds could get you fined or arrested in Disney's home state if that book has not been approved by the governor's media specialists?

As far as I know, Scrooge McDuck comic collections have not been approved in any of Florida's counties.
