Do you recall the first Newbery that you read?
My first was definitely Millions of Cats. (honor) I didn't know it had any special recognition at the time.
The next ones came in a group and I dont recall which I read first. I dont think I knew that they were medal winners either. Witch of blackbird pond; roller skates; young fu of the upper yangtze; strawberry girl. I bought all of those from school book sale- not a fair- just a piece of paper. I still have them.

Just saw this. I don't recall my first Newbery. I recall reading The Island of the Blue Dolphins and Call It Courage when in grammar school.
I just looked over the medal list, and recall reading Rabbit Hill and King of the Wind when I was about 8 or 9, probably before the others I just mentioned.
ETA: I recall reading Charlotte's Web and By the Shores of Silver Lake at a very early age, as I would snitch my older sister's books.

I, too read Blue Dolphins & Courage, both in the 6th grade. I think I read King of the wind in the fifth, because that was when we were encouraged to read the Newberys. I recall really loving it - though I wasn't a horse book girl, per se. I think Hold The Rein Free might have been my favourite of that genre. I read Rabbit Hill a few years ago and quite loved it. Wish that I had known of it as a child. Charlotte's Web I read at the end of third grade. I know that I bought/ brought it in/from California - but I forget why I wasn't reading it sooner. Changed states and schools a few times that year. I didn't read any Little House Books until I read them to my own children. It would have been nice to have had them as a comforting childhood memory.
