2023 Medals & 2024 Medals

If anyone is wondering, as I have been - and couldn't get an answer -

Newbery & Caldecott medals will be finalized on Monday, 30 January.

Unless, of course I am wrong. I think a couple interest me- but feeling as though I am going to get stuck reading too many of no interest. It may be time to reconsider moving on with this project beyond this year.

I have started a post to continue the honor books through 1939 and will post those there.

>2 rebeccareid: Good to know. I assumed by February, for certain.

I'm not as enthusiastic as last year. Ive been plowing through the most recent contributions and cannot find much that I enjoy. I prefer the grammar, sentence-structure, and research that went into the older works. Some of the attitudes are outdated but the elegant beauty whispers to me. Whereas, the newer ones screech at me and bludgeon me over the head; often failing to immerse the reader into the backdrop. Instead of the reader "sensing" the themes - the themes are are spelled out to the reader.

I am hoping for Gary Schmidt's book; though, I have not yet read it. While he can be repetitive, he does wriggle-out those chuckles that lie dormant in my arthritic soul. Also, I did read the book by Katherine Marsh. Though it wasn't, literarily, superlative. I did enjoy it, immensely.

The Newbery, Caldecott, and other Youth Media Awards are always announced on the Monday morning of the ALA Midwinter Meeting (now known as LibLearnEx).

They offer a livestream of the announcements here: https://www.ala.unikron.com/

I've read a few of the mock Newbery nominees.

Here's the list of mock newbery nominees at SLJ.
AN AMERICAN STORY Alexander
* A FIRST TIME FOR EVERYTHING Santat
ALEBRIJES Higuera
* CHINESE MENU: THE HISTORY, MYTHS ... Lin
EB & FLOW Baptist
THE EYES AND THE IMPOSSIBLE Eggers
GONE WOLF McBride
* THE LABORS OF HERCULES BEAL Schmidt
THE LOST YEAR Marsh
* THE MANY ASSASSINATIONS OF SAMIR, THE SELLER OF DREAMS Nayeri
MEXIKID Martin
MY HEAD HAS A BELLYACHE Harris
* THE MONA LISA VANISHES Day
THE SKULL Klassen
* SIMON SORT OF SAYS Bow
* A WALK IN THE WOODS Grimes

*means I've read it.
I really liked those that I've read. It's hard to say which is my favorite. I think Samir, Seller of Dreams has a great chance. Unreliable narrator, light-hearted tone like that in The Inquisitor's Tale. A few of these books are picture books also named as mock Caldecott winners. I definitely think Chinese Menu will get something. American Story will get the Caldecott (haven't read but I've seen the art work and it is amazing). Mona Lisa Vanishes is nonfiction and will get something -- Siebert is for nonfiction -- but I see the possibility of it winning the Newbery as well.

Anyway that's my take so far. I have The Lost Year out from the library but I had to return some of the others before I had a chance to finish.
