A woman and her daughter live in a house outside a city or town. One day war/calamity breaks out and the woman send the girl running. She gets lost for a time in a forest and eventually finds a garden with an old man. He lets her stay and help with the garden and they eat soup in the evenings, there is always enough even though the ingredients are sparse. Eventually she is going to return to her mother. The old man gives her a rose and tells her when it blooms she will see him again. She returns to her mother and realizes many years have passed, though she is still a child. Her and her mother fall asleep with the rose between them and when it comes to full bloom they are dead. It is implied the old man was st. peter.
It had to have been written before 2000, I read it in the late 90s early 00s.
It's a book meant for young children, not too much text to full page art that used very muted colors and a style with a lot of black lines. There were illustrations of demons in the forest, flames over the town when war came, the mothers house was small on a hill, maybe. She wore a scarf over her hair. I vaguely remember assuming it was meant to be Russia when I was a kid.
My husband swears I must've imagined this book because we cannot find it no matter what search terms we use.
The book was in English and I read it in the US.
