Found: Fantasy forbidden magic

I read this book a few years ago -probably about 5 or so. I can’t remember if the book is considered YA or not. The book is set in dystopian NYC(I think that is the city). It starts with the main female character doing magic and she then has to run away and hide because the government tracks magic and it is forbidden. I think the opening chapter has her running down a hallway in an apartment building. There is one scene where she is walking around the city and there are street entertainment and buskers trying to make money. Her friend goes missing and as she is trying to find him, she then gets kidnapped. She is kidnapped by creatures that are not human(maybe Fallen angels or demons) she ends up falling love with the one who captured her.

I was going to suggest So You Want to be a Wizard and others in the same series by Diane Duane but some of the details don't fit.

I found it! It is The Bone Season by Samantha Shannon.
