I've been obsessed with The Starless Sea since I read it, and am even more obsessed with the audio book. It's even more atmospheric in the audiobook, the voices are SO GOOD!
Wondering if anybody else is as fascinated by this book and all the lore as I am! I feel like I want to make a detective wall of all of the themes and histories and the characters that represent other characters and all of it. It's so good.
Anyway, just wanted to start an area to talk about it if anybody is interested. The short stories from Fortunes and Fables are my favorite part of the book, especially the one about the Innkeeper.

>1 liz4444: I glad you liked it. I read it, and enjoyed it quite a bit, but I can't say I got obsessed. I sometimes get obsessed with a non-fiction topic and will read several books on one subject, but I don't re-read (or re-listen) to anything right away.

>1 liz4444: I didn't like The Night Circus that much (esp. the romance part), but I've read a number of enthusiastic comments about The Starless Sea. The basic plot is queer pirates and a lost book? Or something similar?

I love this idea for any book that sparks this kind of fascination!

I absolutely loved Night Circus, a book I still will reread at time. I can so see this book adapted to film, tho Im afraid to watch it because those images will not be the same
>1 liz4444: Was so looking forward to Starless Sea and was very disappointed. The story went all over the place and ended up not finiishing it. Wish I liked as much as you

>3 libraryperilous: I agree. I think the Night Circus romance just was so far removed from my experiences that I couldn't find it relatable. I loved the atmosphere of it, though. In the Starless Sea the main character is gay and there is a pirate supporting character, but the pirate is also a metaphor, and is also a poor translation within one of the books within the book. I don't think the romance in that book totally worked either, but I found it a bit more relatable. I also just love thinking about the book and picking it apart and together in my head. The Starless Sea, esp the audiobook, totally immerses me.
>4 cindydavid4: This is totally fair! I think how all over the place it is is part of what draws me in. There's enough plausible connections that I experience the book differently each time I read it, and never feel like I can fully grasp all of it in my brain. Probably it is because of a ton of plot holes and loose ends, but I like to think I can piece it together if I really try.

>1 liz4444: I had the exact same image of a white board with sticky notes and strings connecting them. That's probably what Erin Morgenstern had to do to keep track herself.
I loved the stories and the world building and the characters. I found the ending to be a bit anticlimactic, perhaps because it had been thoroughly telegraphed in advance.

I reread The Night Circus this year, having read it several years ago. I really loved the atmosphere, and it enabled me to ignore a handful of nits that I might otherwise have picked at. I haven't read The Starless Sea, but I'm adding it to my list. I think it's on page 23 ;-)

I liked The Night Circus, but didn't love it. The writing and the details were beautiful, and I enjoyed the "atmosphere". It would have been nice to have characters and plot, too ;)
I am glad you liked The Starless Sea so much! I can't say I am obsessed with it, but I felt that it was a much better book than The Night Circus. When reviewing it, I wrote "it was like spending hours in a fairy tale art museum." The characters were more interesting than in TNC, and I loved Zachary and Dorian. Stories withing stories within stories are wonderful when done right, and I thought that everything came together beautifully at the end.
