Hi all, does anyone know of any fine editions of The Good Soldier Švejk, by Jaroslav Hašek, or Narziss and Goldmund by Hermann Hesse?
The former is a book that I haven't read yet, and I would like to read it in a nice edition - if there's no nice editions then surely it's high time?! The book is 100 years old and the original anti-war satire!
The Hesse is one of my favourite books of all time, and I can read German so a nice German edition of the Hesse would work just as well too. I've searched and searched for a worthy edition but have come up empty-handed... Any help would be muchly appreciated!

As far as I can tell, there are no "fine" editions of Narziß und Goldmund, but there are some trade editions that are "finer" than the others.
A well-preserved early Fischer edition would be quite handsome, and the 1955 Büchergilde Gutenberg linen has an attractive design.
They are still probably not fine in the sense that you mean, though :)

>2 thfrgi: thanks for that! Fischer did the first edition I think, which I’ve got, and which I’ve actually read (Frakturschrift is not so hard after a few pages). Perhaps a later printing would have nicer paper??
I’ve also got the later Büchergilde edition, from 1977 I think, but the text feels a bit too cramped for me. I’ll pick up a copy of the earlier one. I don’t know why I haven’t got that one as well, perhaps there were no copies in good condition when I did my booklooker.de trawl. Thanks for the tip…
Any fine press publishers reading this could perhaps take note that if they printed either of these gems they’d have at least one guaranteed sale, maybe even more, that’s gotta be worth something, oder?

Consider becoming a member of Consensus Press. It's a brand-new fine press where the members pick one title each year to develop into a finely made book. We are currently working on selecting our first title, and I'm hopeful new members will be allowed in the future. I can say that after reading Steppenwolf for the first time and loving it, Narziss and Goldmund would get a yes vote from me :)

FWIW, I consider Narziss and Goldmund superior to Steppenwolf and this would be an outstanding suggestion for The Consensus Press. I cannot recall any of Hermann Hesse's works in either a fine or private press format. Even the prolific Folio Society with a bibliography of thousands of books has never issued any of Hesse's works.

>5 dlphcoracl: I have the LEC's Steppenwolf but that might be it. If so, there is a void.

I forgot that one and I stand corrected. However, I am certain Narziss und Goldmund has never been issued in a fine or letterpress edition because I recently searched for one, in vain.

>4 AMindForeverVoyaging: looking at the titles that made the second round, I regret not joining. They are more mainstream than I expected. That might not be the right word but I knew all of the ones that were posted save one.

>4 AMindForeverVoyaging: I considered it but thought, like >8 SDB2012:, that my tastes might well differ from the general membership. I would hate to somehow miss out on Narziss and Goldmund though.
And >5 dlphcoracl: the Folio Society did actually do Steppenwolf, with a textured paper binding and a sewn-in booklet, nicely done and good enough for me. The Steppenwolf has been a single read for me though, whereas I've enjoyed Narziss and Goldmund several times and will do again...
