Best and/or most comprehensive books on Japanese and Chinese mythology?

I like more textual books that provide deeper and more comprehensive overviews. I don't mind illustrations - but richly worded and informative text is more important to me.

Thanks for any information. ^_^

Are you mostly interested in the humanoid gods that originated wordly things and events such as Amaterasu and the Jade Emperor presented through European perspectives, would you like books about how stories of the vastly large variety of nature spirits shaped Japanese and Chinese cultures, or are you looking for comparisons of Shintoism, Buddhism, and Confucianism?

When I see "mythology", I think of dominant religions in the area ties to specific time periods that represent a culture to foreigners. That doesn't really apply well for these two countries. The first book that came to mind that actually has "Mythology" in the title has frustrated me in how misleading the descriptions were. I've been correcting my wrong assumptions from that book for years.

Perhaps it's best to ignore my questions. The more I look at the books I know, resources such as mythopedia.com, and wikipedia.com references, the more certain I am that good, comprehensive overviews are difficult to find... from where I sit.

Someone else might come along soon to change that.

>2 aspirit: Hello. Thanks kindly for your response! You are clearly knowledgeable in this area. :) I'm utterly ignorant of Chinese and Japanese mythology, so I couldn't really answer your questions - I'm sorry. :(

In that case - pretending you live in a world where the Internet doesn't exist - can you recommend any good book combinations that collectively provide a decent overview from where you sit? If that makes sense.

Thanks for any help.

For Japanese mythology, I had a good long look recently at The Book of Yokai. And I've read Ozaki's Japanese Fairy Tales, which seems to include mythological content. Hearn's Kwaidan is another work to consider.

If fond of Joseph Campbell , the second volume of Masks of Gods is about Oriental mythology.
