I don't think I've felt so behind on this obituary-philes group before. Sad to learn that Barbara Ehrenreich has died, though I know that she was first diagnosed with cancer decades ago - and wrote a book criticising the idea that people can cure themselves simply through a positive attitude rather than healthcare (yes, I know, it's about more than that but I bought paperback and then Kindle copies which remain TBR). I have read at least two of her books and she has been a writer whose books I always wanted to read since Nickel and Dimed - the book about paid exploitative jobs and the working poverty trap in the US that spawned a lot of imitations - the two most direct imitations I've read, by English authors, about the UK, were very inferior in writing and analysis, though I would give Fran Abrams another try as this was early work, and I wasn't predisposed to like Polly Toynbee! However, this is definitely one of my pet subjects (and things sadly haven't got better on either side of the Atlantic).

>15 elkiedee: Her son Ben is a writer too. As someone dealing with multiple myeloma.....a blood cancer I can't imagine dealing with that without oncologists or treatment plans. Basically it's a disease that attacks your skeleton--most commonly starting with the ribcage and the spinal column and your immunity. For whatever reason it's because your body starts mass producing plasma cells and they start eating up red blood cells and boring holes into your bone structure (lesions) to get at your bone marrow. Without treatment it would be straight downhill with multiple fractures and broken bones and you might not last more than a couple three years. A very painful way to die. Between doing nothing and taking things in your own hands I think I'd opt for the latter. Since there are now good treatment plans (though mostly fairly recent) why would you do anything else at least if you had health insurance or could afford it?

😢 I was reading about the details of her life and early illness that left her unable to have children. There was a scene in Wolf Hall where Cromwell is examining the hand of his newborn baby and compared the structure to a fan. It was so detailed and beautifully written my thought at the time was a man would be unlikely to make an observation like that. Now I know it was her loss that made her so intently observant. RIP
