I was interested to see the article mention in passing the idea that Inherent Vice might have been in progress for decades prior to its publication. That would account for its appearance so soon after Against the Day, among other features. The California novels do in some respects seem like three different attempts to write essentially the same book. Maybe he just never stopped on that one. Or he finally got it right with Inherent Vice and then went on to write Bleeding Edge in the same vein.
