High School

After being retired for a year, there is a possibility that I will be going back to the high school setting. I've only ever done elementary libraries, and many years ago was children's/YA librarian in the public library. Hit me with stuff I need to know.

Relationships are key! I always tried to get to know the kids before I had to really discipline them.

I always thought the best thing about secondary (over elementary) was that people came in as needed - very few "scheduled" classes.

Started working Thursday...School starts this Wednesday! Open House was tonight and I met several students, including my aides, all of whom worked last year, so training will be minimal. I've made one book display ("Read Any Good Movies Lately {or TV or Plays}", and pulled smaller displays that matched up to posters already there (survival, military, crime, etc.)

My only wish (and I've made this observation many times) is that when you have new faculty/staff, SOMEONE takes the time to explain some of the details of the school's way of doing things. For instance: Open House was last night; I stayed all day, from 8am to 6:30 pm. It was officially over at 6; but we had kids coming in late to pick up their chromebooks (not me; Tech was using the library for this purpose). Then today, I went in, only to find that today was not a teacher work day. I still haven't gotten my code to print copies; no idea if I have morning, afternoon, or lunch duty. Are we allowed to have mini-fridge, coffee maker, microwave, in our rooms. Just where the heck is the teacher's lounge? Where is my mail box? Who do I tell if I need a day off? Do I arrange for my sub, or does someone else? Do I do my own laminating? My own printing? Just how does this phone system work? Can I have a list of teachers and their rooms? I realize I was a really late hire, and I'll get there, but these are issues I've had at every school I've taught. In the meantime, I'm taking advantage of my last day of not working. :)

I wish you the best and hope you have a great year! Until the office can provide all that info for you, find someone on staff who can answer some of those questions. A lot of school leaders assume you know all this already - which is a pretty silly assumption!

Good luck!
