Pick Three (3) Mini Challenge - August 2022

August is the 8th month, but it used to be 6th. In the Southern hemisphere the winter is beginning to disappear, and in the Northern hemisphere summer is still in charge, but autumn is getting ready to say "hello". Let's find out some interesting facts about the month of August.

1.August 1 - This day was traditionally known as "Lammas Day", was a festival to mark the annual wheat and corn harvest.

2. August 11 - This day marks the end of the "Dog Days" of Summer, which began on July 3.

3. August 17 This is when the "Cat Nights" begin, going back to a rather obscure Irish legend concerning witches. This bit of folklore also led to the idea that a cat has nine lives.

4. August 19 - National Aviation Day, chosen for the birthday of Orville Wright who piloted the first recorded flight of a powered heavier-than-air machine in 1903 in Kitty Hawke, North Carolina.

5. August 25 - This is Kiss and Make up Day - Don't think this needs any further explanation.

6. August 26 - Women’s Equality Day- This day celebrates the 1920 ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment and, with it, women’s right to vote in the United States.

OK, I think I can join this challenge this month. I'm still reading these books (or in some cases I'm going to start them because of this challenge!), so I'll put a checkmark by them when I've finished.

The Cardinal of the Kremlin by Tom Clancy (initials in NORTH CAROLINA) ✔️
The Alienist by Caleb Carr (initials in NORTH CAROLINA) ✔️

Choice between:

The Plague Dogs by Richard Adams (dogs on the cover)
Tales from Watership Down by Richard Adams (folklore)
Black Beauty by Anna Sewell (written by a woman) ✔️

My edition of "The Plague Dogs" is the original British edition that I bought when I went to the UK in 9th grade as part of the original Friendship Force. It contains the unfiltered dialect for the Yorkshire farmers, and the tod's dialogue is *pure* Geordie. I remember reading his parts out loud so that I could understand what he was saying. Sort of like how difficult a true North Carolina mountain or Kentucky mountain accent would sound like to someone not from the southern US (I'm thinking of you, my Canadian and British LT friends!).

Thanks as always for a great challenge, Carol!

>7 threadnsong: You are so welcome....and thank you for the check mark to show me that you have finished a book so I could see where you may have journeyed in the world with it. I find that creating challenges "feeds" my creative needs and keeps me almost sane:) Sometimes I wonder about the "sane" part, but I have always loved writing/creating "stuff". I created conservation programs for school children for the 28 years I was in the education department at the zoo. BEST JOB EVER!!! Can I think of all of you as "big kids"??? Accents...We have so many regional accents in the U.S. It isn't so much the accent that makes understanding sometimes hard here...it's the terminology that different regions use for the same thing. My grandfather spoke with such a heavy Scottish accent that my cousin and I translated for the neighbors what he said in English and what they said in their southern terms. I grew up in Florida. He and my grandmother, who was from Northern Ireland, both spoke their regional Galic dialogs...with each other but always English when with their children and we grandchildren.
