Large number of SOURCES disappearing

1johninvienna
Modificato: Ott 15, 2022, 9:57 pm

Greetings!

I am using a large number of sources - 314 -for cataloging obscure publications especially from non-English countries. I have noticed for some time more and more of my sources are no longer valid
WHY ARE THESE IMPORTANT SOURCES DISAPPEARING?
FOR CHINA ONLY AMAZON is left;
For BHUTAN, UKRAINE, etc. NONE!
I have added "(MAJOR PROBÖEM FOR ME)" for those I very much miss and "(HELP!!! MAJOR PROBLEM FOR ME)" which are an even bigger problem.

first QUESTION - WHAT IS GOING ON
second QUESTION - my SEARCH WHERE still lists 314 - can the no longer valid please be eliminated
third QUESTION - can the arrangement of sources be improved - alphabetical or most used or whatever. Editing each one of 314 is a pain in the backside!

Some of my sources no longer working, more will follow if it is necessary:

I'm not LT staff; but I do help with the sources. Generally, sources fail for two big reasons (not comprehensive at all):

1. Systems change (e.g. Stanford is now on FOLIO, LT is still using Symphony settings)
2. Settings change (the library could have stopped using z39.50 or locked down access)

Stanford University -- now on FOLIO; connection details needed
University of California, California Digital Library -- now n WorldCat; dead to us
University of California, Los Angeles -- now on Alma; fixed
University of California, Berkeley -- now on Alma; fixed
University of California, San Diego -- now on Alma; fixed (all UC sources fixed except Santa Cruz)
Southwestern Oklahoma State University -- now on WorldCat; dead to us
Stillwater (OK) Public -- possibly locked down; possibly newer version of Sirsi
New York Public Library -- NYPL isn't available to any service outside of NY state; could have exception; LT staff would have to communicate with NYPL
Cal State University, Stanislaus -- now on Alma; fixed it (fixed all Cal State sources)
North Central Kansas Library System -- on newer version of VERSO; connection details needed
Lafayette College (Easton, PA) -- now on FOLIO; connection details needed
Union College (Schenectady, NY) -- now on Alma; fixed
Florida State University -- now on Alma; connection details needed

I surmise we may also be seeing some changes behind the scenes with automatic testing of sources that is marking them as broken. The trouble, though, is that a lot of these sources are unstable and sometimes go up and down, and brokenness marker may be being applied a bit overzealously and the specs should be changed to require more consistent failure over a time period before marking as broken. This is just an educated guess. Perhaps ccatalfo could be pinged to comment?

I will try to take a look at some of the sources in the list specifically if I get a chance. Thanks to lesmel for the great work.

Thanks for the replies. Actually it's the non-USA sources that I miss the most. Some national libraries and many others that I use for obscure publications. Many countries have NO sources left - small catalogues or other matter from them are not available on Amazon or Library of Congress. Of course I can and do enter a lot of material "ADD MANUALLY" but find it is better to have source to show the publication is genuine. I almost always look in WorldCat first to find libraries where the publication is located. Strangely some works are not there but are in LibraryThing (e.g. University of Vienna).
Anyway thanks for taking trouble
Greetings from Vienna - JOHN

The Bad:
University of Sydney
On Alma now, seems to need a login. Staff would need to solicit.

National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy Libraries
Connects but is throwing "system error" messages. Fiddled a bit with the exposed settlings, but probably needs backend work.

National Library of Bhutan
OPAC doesn't seem to be accessible through their website either, so guessing there's issues their end.

Central Institute of Indian Languages
Changed domain from ciillibrary.org to library.ciil.org, but get access-control failure. May need login.

United Arab Emirates University --
WorldCat, dead to us.

Danish Union Catalog --
https://danbib.dk/zgateway-tekniske-parametre-driftsversion
Looks like staff will need to contact for login details.

Sultan Qaboos University
WorldCat, dead to us.

University of Utrecht
WorldCat, dead to us.
------
The Good:
Wellcome Fixed (domain/IP change).

Biblioteca Nacional Mariano Moreno fixed (domain/IP change)

Added Z10plus, which combines German SWB and GBV, so it should be a workaround on SWB. (Would appreciate feedback whether it is working well, as the list of database options is extensive. I *think* I got it right)

Biblioteca Naţională a României fixed (domain change)

Univerzity Karlovy fixed (moved to Alma)

Univerzity v Ostrave was working on backend when tested (possibly overzealously marked broken, now marked working).

PUCPeru fixed (domain change to Sirsi hosted Symphony)

Florida State University fixed (figured out the Alma config. Most of the Florida universities that used to be hosted on FLVC should fall into place now. Will try to start on them -- ETA got all except the virtual union catalog, which will need correct database name).

6lesmel
Lug 22, 2022, 10:44 am

National Art Library, Victoria and Albert Museum -- now on WorldCat; dead to us

University of Cambridge -- on Alma; fixed

Österreichischer Bibliothekenverbund -- on Alma; uses SRU and OAI-PMH not z39.50

University of New England -- fixed; updated connection details

McGill University -- WorldCat; dead to us

Got Erfurt and the SWB (by going through the z10plus server). Also several other German unis and hochschulen that had switched to z10plus.

Found connection details for UChicago's FOLIO implementation.
https://www.lib.uchicago.edu/search/catalogs/z3950/
Unfortunately, looks like it will need backend work as it throws a system error. And the server naming scheme doesn't seem to carry over to Stanford either.

A whole bunch of Cal State U sources just turned up broken again, though they're working now. Doubling down on the overzealous broken-marking being a major issue. ETA: Same with a bunch of UCs, including Berkeley. ETA: And I "fixed" Ostrava, but its details should be working fine.

Lug 27, 2022, 3:59 pm

Right. I'm deep in the bowels of the Alma install lists every spare second I get, so hundreds of sources are getting edited (added working/added with need to get credentials or whitelisting/removed/fixed), but not necessarily the ones requested. Anyone want to put together an updated version of >1 johninvienna: with progress?

14ccatalfo
Modificato: Lug 29, 2022, 1:23 pm

Update on this - i'm going to try tweaking the parameters around which LT decides that a z3950 datasource is not working. It was set to 60% of previous 5 searches failing would get it marked as not working. Going to try 80% of the last 50 searches will force it to be marked not working.

Let's see how that does - hopefully it will be a bit more robust in the face of intermittent downtimes or failures.

15lesmel
Lug 29, 2022, 3:34 pm

>13 davidgn: FYI, there's a chance that a number of Alma installs that don't work for z39.50 might work with SRU. The integrations are activated separately in the system. Also, the company (ExL) will only connect Alma to Alma via SRU now. Makes turning on z39.50 access less enticing for libraries.

Everyone thanks for the efforts. But just to show ones frustration, Switzerland, which had many libraries listed before, now has only:
ILO - United Nations International Labour Office

Sistema bibliotecario ticinese (Switzerland)
SLSP Swisscovery

Swiss National Library should be on Alma, but doesn't seem to be returning a full complement of results. Helsinki Metropolitan Libraries and Melinda return mostly "No results found".

I tested some books I've added from Melinda or HelMet earlier. It seems searching for such books from Melinda or HelMet finds some but not all of them. Overcat finds them from the sources they've been added.

Examples:
isbn 9789516073685 (added from HelMet): Melinda >no, HelMet >no, Overcat >yes/Helmet, helmet.fi >yes
isbn 9789510434130 (added from Melinda): Melinda >yes, HelMet>yes, Overcat >yes/Melinda&HelMet
isbn 9789511392910 (added from Melinda): Melinda >yes, HelMet >no, Overcat >yes/Melinda, helmet.fi >yes

Hi all,

Thanks for the troubleshooting, everyone, and sorry for the troubles!

We're almost done a systems upgrade on Overcat and the jobs which run the datasource testing and marking are going to get redeployed in the next few days. I've had to hold off working on this until that's complete. Once that's done, I can dig in for real and figure out what the trouble is. I've no doubt we'll be able to sort it out.

The good part about this upgrade is it puts overcat on much more solid footing, systems-wise. That will allow us to maintain these better.

So as soon as this upgrade is done, I'll be on this and will get it sorted out.

I'll report back when the upgrade is complete and I start on it.

Update: I found an error happening for non UTF-8 datasources where updated logic for Z39.50 retrieval was forcing records to UTF-8 - this caused them to fail.

In the case of CNB - CZECH National Bibliography I also needed to set it's record_encoding to latin-1 in order to get the records parsed correctly. That one is now working.

I will do some more digging and look at others as well.

>21 johninvienna:, >22 davidgn:, >23 davidgn:, >30 ccatalfo:

It seems to me that the Z39.50 format is far less common in Switzerland than in other places. I recently checked with the SBS "Schweizerische Bibliothek für Blinde, Seh- und Lesebehinderte" (Swiss library for the blind, visually impaired and print disabled) and got the answer that the SBS does not support Z39.50.
Whether this is only the case in Switzerland, in German-speaking Europe, or in Europe in general, I do not know.
At least in German-speaking Europe, SRU (https://www.dnb.de/DE/Professionell/Metadatendienste/Datenzugang/SRU/sru_node.html) seems to be widespread.

At least for "Det kongelige Bibliotek" it is not easy to find an example.

Bonjour Monsieur,

University of California, California Digital Library
Mentioned in >2 lesmel:, University of California, California Digital Library is also WorldCat; but I'm not 100% sure about that. UC system is using Alma/Primo. UCDL's website mentions using any of the UC Primo interfaces to search UCDL holdings.

National Art Library, Victoria and Albert Museum
Mentioned in >6 lesmel: National Art Library, Victoria and Albert Museum -- now on WorldCat; dead to LT forever and ever. Are you seeing this source in the Add Sources list?

Österreichischer Bibliothekenverbund
Mentioned in >6 lesmel: Österreichischer Bibliothekenverbund -- on Alma; uses SRU and OAI-PMH not z39.50. Staff will have to fix this and broken sources are probably pretty low in the priority list.

New York Public Library
Mentioned in >2 lesmel: also New York Public Library -- NYPL isn't available to any service outside of NY state; could have exception; LT staff would have to communicate with NYPL. It marked as not working and unreleased (which means not visible to LT users). Are you seeing this source in the Add Sources list?

Südwestdeutscher Bibliotheksverbund SWB
Südwestdeutschen Bibliotheksverbund (SWB)
What is the difference between Südwestdeutschen Bibliotheksverbund (SWB) and Südwestdeutscher Bibliotheksverbund SWB?

McGill University
As mentioned by me in >6 lesmel: -- McGill will never work again as long as they are a WorldCat library. You shouldn't even be able to see this source in the list. I marked it as not working and unreleased (which means not visible to LT users). Are you seeing this source in the Add Sources list?

Southwestern Oklahoma State University
In >2 lesmel:, I mentioned Southwestern Oklahoma State University is WorldCat -- again, permanently never to work again. You shouldn't even be able to see this source in the list. I marked it as not working and unreleased (which means not visible to LT users). Are you seeing this source in the Add Sources list?

University of Sydney
Probably SRU and not z39.50.

davidgn has worked tirelessly on getting sources updated and working. That is 100% volunteer effort. And there are some weird bugs and connection issues to be worked around, fix, etc.

I1, pretty sure MELVYL has been fully decommissioned, and haven't seen any indication that Z39.50 connectivity to CDL has continued on in the Alma age. Probably no longer available, but if anybody wants to research or file a support ticket, would be nice. http://www.oac.cdlib.org/about/ may be one place to start. But presumed dead until evidence to the contrary is presented.
I2 Dead. Remove from your list.
I3 Would need SRU support. That is a feature in the process of being implemented by staff, but with no estimate on completion.
I4 Nothing to be done unless staff can arrange something.
I5 Has been removed as a duplicate to I8. Remove from your list.
I6 Dead. Remove from your list.
I7 Has moved to new ILS with no recognizable open Z ports. Short of inquiring to confirm, presumed dead.
I8 Weird bug. This is already being looked into by staff. Nothing to be done by tweaking connnection settings.
I9 Will need staff to contact and get credentials for this one. Seems to be working but needs a login now.
I10 The database nat01 on ext.kb.dk is no longer valid. The Nationalmuseet is not on the list of external databases available at https://aleph-01.kb.dk/F/UAUEDM4L83F2QPDAVGYAV5655APC6M5KXFPC7XCYRI2KXI4IK4-0017.... . And I'm finding no evidence of a WebOPAC at https://natmus.dk/historisk-viden/forskning/. This might benefit from direct inquiry to the Nationalmuseet, Det Kongelige Bibliothek, or both.
I11 Dead, mentioned above, remove from your list.
I12 Last I checked it wasn't even serving an OPAC /// I12 Serving Web OPAC at http://220.158.236.131 but no open Z ports I can find. Likely interpretation: they got the Koha OPAC (back?) up, but nobody bothered to turn the Z-server on.
EDIT: They also used to have an OPAC hosted by Det Kongelige Bibliothek. But it's down. https://ext.kb.dk/F/?func=file&file_name=find-b&local_base=bhu01&con....
So if anyone writes to DKB about I10, the Nationalmuseet, it might make sense to add an inquiry about the Bhutan database as well.
I13 Ditto I3.
I14 Verified Z-server on tsinghua.alma.exlibrisgroup.com. Needs authentication. Warrants staff comms as well to request the credential details.
I15 Just checked, and no recognized open ports. Presumed dead.

Ls will get some attention tomorrow.

>86 lesmel: Thanks. Note, unreleased sources that have been added to a user's individual list of sources seem to remain there until manually removed by the user. Annoying. Whether this is a bug or feature is unclear, though.

Also ... anyone else notice this thread takes forever to load after message 83, pending a connection to https://bam.nr-data.net/ ? Given staff are monitoring the thread: I think someone needs to tell Pedro that New Relic is hiccuping (though cause or symptom, I can't say). Either directly or as a bug report. I'm busy. :-)

I think you have the dbname correct. I looked at a PNX record (don't ask it's just a debuging tool for linking access) from their Primo and 86THU_INST appears where I would expect the inst code.

>96 lesmel: I think it's message 85 with all the touchstones that aren't touchstones but a poor choice to use square brackets.

This makes sense, but I have now tried it five times, observing carefully. The behavior is consistent. The page seems to cease loading after message 83. Message 83 appears in full, message 84 (and 85, etc.) does not appear until after the delay. The problem message may well be 85, but the effect is to cause the loading to suspend at the end of message 83.

I observe that the "Reply | More" command line appears after message 83, but the "Change bug status?" box does not.

I see the same behavior. It gets through 83 and churns and then the rest of the page loads. So, yeah. Let's not derail this bug with another bug. lol

Right, L series.

L1. DEAD, remove from your list.
L2. Has working Alma Zserver, needs staff to contact for credentials.
L3. Connection details are good, weird backend bug going on that has already been reported.
L4. FIXED. Had unreleased this as a duplicate, but unreleased the other duplicate and restored this one instead. That was easy.
L5. No recognizable open Z-ports. Presumed Z-server discontinued.
L6. Now has OPAC at hds.hebis.de, but can't find open Z-ports. Might be worth prodding further if anyone wants to.
L7. Koha at smc.thulb.uni-jena.de, no recognizable open Z-ports. Presumed Z-server discontinued.
L8. Koha at koha.eunc.edu, no recognizable open Z-ports. Presumed Z-server discontinued.
L9 & L10. System now called Zenon, zenon.dainst.org. Unreleased L10 as defunct duplicate. I do not recognize the system behind Zenon, and no recognizable open ports found. Sufficiently important and unfamiliar source to warrant staff contact to find whether there is still Z-server available.

L11. Koha on hbr.thulb.uni-jena.de, no recognizable open Z-ports. Presumed Z-server discontinued.
L12. On Alma, verified Z-server at hbz-rptu.alma.exlibrisgroup.com, dbname 49HBZ_RTU and/or 49HBZ_RTPU, needs staff to request credentials.
L13. Aleph server has changed to aleph.ukma.kiev.ua:9991, dbname used to be KMA_UTF, but can't get searches working on it in test or in yaz-client. Anybody want to take a crack at it?
L14. Don't know what they're running now, but it sure ain't from Innovative anymore. No idea if there's Zserver access, but don't recognize any open Z-ports. OPAC at https://wellcomecollection.org/works?query=title if anybody wants to try to identify. No port 210 open on search.wellcomelibrary.org, so if there's Z39.50 access, it's not via Sierra. Complex system per >101 lesmel: . An important enough source to warrant a staff inquiry.
L15. DEAD. Remove from your list.
L16. On AG Verso. They moved all of their catalogs to a new server address, and none of them seem to work of have recognizable Z-ports open. We're already making inquiries on these and waiting for replies. Ultimately, either none of them will work, or all of them probably will.
L17. Running something from Innovative, port 210 closed, so that's all she wrote. Presumed Z-server discontinued.
L18. Running Koha. No recognizable open Z-ports. Presumed Z-server discontinued.
L19. DEAD. Remove from your list. REPLACED. IDS is defunct as such, see "Zentral- und Hochschulbibliothek Luzern" for replacement source with same scope. cf. https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Informationsverbund_Deutschschweiz
L20. OPAC at s-opac.sap.hokkyodai.ac.jp, No recognizable open Z-ports. Presumed Z-server discontinued.

L21. Running Library.Solution PAC. There's an already-internally-reported bug that's affecting all libraries running this system at the moment. Hopefully this will be fixed when/if that bug is fixed.
L22. OPAC on webcat.lib.okayama-u.ac.jp, No recognizable open Z-ports. Presumed Z-server discontinued.
L23. DEAD, remove from your list.
L24. Old Aleph database down ( https://aleph-01.kb.dk/F/?func=file&file_name=find-b&local_base=drh01 ) new opac kongernessamling.reindex.net, but not finding any open Z-ports. Unfamiliar system. Worth poking and/or maybe e-mailing.
L25. Their old OPALS OPAC is defunct, and I can't find any evidence of a library or OPAC for one at http://feldborgfrie.dk/ . Maybe bnielsen can give it a shot, as he has no language barrier?
L26. I renamed to Biblioteket Frederiksberg. Old OPAC at frbbib.axielldrift.dk defunct. New OPAC at https://fkb.dk/search/ting. No recognizable open Z-ports. Presumed no Z-server available in new system.
L27. Old Aleph database down. ( https://aleph-01.kb.dk/F/?func=file&file_name=find-b&local_base=grb01 ). New OPAC at https://mus.reindex.net/GRB/main/Landing.php , ditto to L24.
L28. Pretty sure this is now Nordsjaellandshospital (bnielsen , can you confirm)? Library page https://www.nordsjaellandshospital.dk/forskning/tilbud-til-forskere/Sider/Sundhe..., OPAC https://med.reindex.net/HIS/main/Landing.php, so ditto to L24, L27.
L29. Old system at tora.htk.dk definct, OPAC served at https://bibliotek.htk.dk/search/ting cf. L26, No recognizable open Z-ports. Presumed no Z-server available in new system.
L30. OPAC at www.bpzoliborz.pl/katalog/ , Running System Biblioteczny MATEUSZ. No recognizable Z-ports open on bpzoliborz.pl, where 210 was open before. Presumed Z-server discontinued.

L31. DEAD. Remove from your list.
L32. Connection is good, but server is throwing Error: Bib1 Error: 14 System error in presenting records -- v2 addinfo, which is likely an issue on the server side. May not be anything we can do.
L33. Running something from Innovative, port 210 closed, so that's all she wrote. Presumed Z-server discontinued.
L34. Has moved to Alma. Z-server confirmed at univ-smb.alma.exlibrisgroup.com , access control error. Staff will need to obtain credentials.
L35. Defunct, replaced with SCDI - Service de Coopération Documentaire Interuniversitaire de Montpellier (www.scdi-montpellier.fr) which is on Alma, with four separate linked catalogs. Trying to figure out the components connection details. lesmel, thoughts?
L36. Error on the server side. Someone needs to get them to fix their Z-server. See appendix at >103 davidgn:
L37. FIXED. They moved to Koha, and it works just fine.
L38. DEAD. Remove from your list.
L39. old OPAC at http://161.246.37.11/ defunct. New one at opac.lib.kmitl.ac.th No recognizable open Z-ports. Presumed no Z-server available in new system.
L40. Known bug, discussed earlier in this thread.

L41. Renamed to Austin Public Library (Austin, TX). Per LoC gateway, it's aupl.sirsi.net:2200/Unicorn -- and it works from LoC, but port 2200 appears closed from my end, and LT can't connect either. Best interpretation is that staff will have to contact them for IP whitelisting.
L42. Switched to Koha, OPAC at catalogo.uacj.mx , No recognizable open Z-ports. Presumed Z-server discontinued.
L43. Now on Koha at librarycatalogue.nvli.in, No recognizable open Z-ports. Presumed Z-server discontinued. Important enough to still be worth contacting. Debating bolding this one for staff.
L44. Seems to have migrated from Horizon to Alpha server at lib.rsu.ac.th but no recognizable open Z-ports. Presumed Z-server discontinued.
L45. Renamed Université Paris Cité. Per Wikipedia, "Paris Descartes completely merged with Paris Diderot University in 2019 to form a new Paris Cité University." Has verified Z-server at uspc-upde.alma.exlibrisgroup.com but Access control failure. Staff will need to contact for credentials.
L46. Verified Z-server at colmex.alma.exlibrisgroup.com but access control error. Staff will need to contact for credentials.
L47. Verified Z-server at postech.alma.exlibrisgroup.com but access control error. Staff will need to contact for credentials.
L48. I can't even connect to the OPAC here. No open ports on Aleph server either. Pretty sure it's broken on their end.
L49. DEAD. Remove from your list.
L50. Moved to Follett, but getting access control failure. Staff would need to contact, but hard to justify prioritizing.

L51. Now on Koha at librarycatalogue.nvli.in, No recognizable open Z-ports. Presumed Z-server discontinued.
L52. Ditto L21.
L53. DEAD. Remove from your list.
L54. Appears to be broken on the server end. See appendix. >103 davidgn:

L57. This one is actually interesting. They've moved to Folio, but I can't seem to break out of the EBSCO discovery to get to the underlying catalog and find something that might yield connection details. Anyone have any thoughts? Worst case, we could ask directly.
L58. DEAD. Remove from your list. Replaced with SLSP Swisscovery.
L59. Known weird bug. Presumably ccatalfo is already working on it.
L60. Has moved to Symphony. No recognizable open Z-ports. Presumed Z-server discontinued.

L61. No longer independent catalog, has been rolled into https://www.bibliotheekwb.nl/ from which I have never been able to find a Z-server
L62. Ditto L21, L52.
L63. DEAD. Remove from your list.
L64. Provided credentials no longer work. Staff will have to contact again.
L65. DEAD. Remove from your list.
L66. Running something from Innovative, port 210 closed, so that's all she wrote. Presumed Z-server discontinued.
L67. DEAD. Remove from your list.
L68. Running Horizon, no recognized Z-ports open, presumed discontinued Z-server.
L69. Doesn't look like they're running Koha anymore, but I'm not sure what they are running. No recognized Z-ports open, presumed discontinued Z-server. Anybody want to poke?
L70. Running Sierra, port 210 closed, so that's all she wrote. Presumed Z-server discontinued. Moving to FOLIO, though, so may not be dead long.

L71. DEAD. Remove from your list. Defunct as such, merged into Commonwealth University of Pennsylvania. Substitute source "Commonwealth University of Pennsylvania (Bloomsburg, Lock Haven, and Mansfield, PA)"
L72. System still appears to be Aleph server. No recognized Z-ports open. Presumed Z-server discontinued.
L73. Has moved to Koha, no recognized Z-ports open. Presumed Z-server discontinued.
L74. DEAD. Remove from your list. Appears no longer independently searchable, but searchable via source "OPAL - Ohio Private Academic Libraries"
L75. DEAD. Remove from your list.
L76. Running Millennium, but no recognized Z-ports found, Z-server presumed discontinued.
L77. FIXED. Switched to hosted Unicorn.
L78. Koha at koha.tiss.edu, no recognizable open Z-ports. Presumed Z-server discontinued.
L79. The old OPALS OPAC is defunct (https://sola.kari.opalsinfo.net/), no mention of library or library catalog from website (https://www.sola-afghanistan.org/ ), but any leads would be appreciated. Apparently school has relocated to Rwanda. https://www.thecricket.com/out_and_about/mbts-library-notes-march-11/article_c10...
L80. FIXED. Or rather, re-tested and actually working fine, although seems to be transitioning to Koha.

L81. On Alma, verified Z-server at su.alma.exlibrisgroup.com:1921/65SPO_SP , needs staff to request credentials.
L82. DEAD. Remove from your list.
L83. Moved to Koha. Multiple possible ports are open, but can't connect on any of them. Probably an issue on the server end. See appendix. >103 davidgn:

Have bolded or italicized numbers here and in >88 davidgn: requiring staff correspondence. If OP >1 johninvienna: or anybody else wants to contact any of the others to verify that they're indeed dead (i.e. no longer providing Z39.50 access), by all means, please have at it.

Dear davidgn!

Thank you for all your efforts. I am over 80 years old - with some health problems - and actually do not understand all the technical specifications. I LEFT MY SOURCES LIST AS IS, BUT WILL NOW UPDATE IT WITH YOUR LIST WITH THE NUMBERING by deleting all those that dont work. Of course I can enter all the books manually, but I prefer to have a "library" which gives some kind of validation. It seems to me that a lot of the internet progress - is well - getting lost in ever more sophistications and complications. Getting COVID-19 tests with APPS and QR codes (here in Vienna) sometimes works and sometimes does not. The new Parking APP (yes I can use that) now and then sends a e-mail (which I have only on my laptops and main computer - dont want all the damn e-mails on the cell phone - here called a handy!) and recently I had to give up and drive back home. Now I am using public transport to Used Book Shops and taking a TAXI home. One of my main sites at the museum wants you to change passwords every six weeks, they have to be with large and small letters, numbers and special signs and CANNOT be similar to previously used ones. GOOD GRIEF!

I really appreciate your help and would love to have you here one day for a visit to Vienna and our museums. I could help with your finances!
AGAIN THANKS FOR THE EFFORTS. I am still surprised that so many sources that I used for obscure European musuem publications, books in Urdu und Farsi, etc. etc. no longer work but did for many years!

Greetings

Hello John, if you have chance, would you consider editing your post #85, >85 johninvienna: to remove the square brackets around each "auto detected as not working" – because square brackets are a device used here for touchstones (links to books), the many square brackets in your post are unfortunately making this topic interminably slow to load every time anybody accesses it. I will copy one entry here the way I see it:
1. University of California, California Digital Library Auto detected as not working
Then I went into edit and saw:
Biblioteka Publiczna w Dzielnicy Żoliborz m.st. Warszawy "square bracket" Auto detected as not working "square bracket"

I never stop learning here even with my biblical age!
Thanks, did not want to cause any problems!

Thanks once again!
I may be travelling to Boston and Maine next year. My best friend here bought a six bedroom summer house in MAINE (good grief). I want to come to Boston to visit once again the
Musuem of Fine Arts and the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. Also, I have never seen the JFK Library. I would love to take you to dinner or whatever.
I also have over 1,000 duplicate books (don't ask) and about 700 them are already listed on my LibraryThing site under collections "DIUPLICATE". If you find a book
there I can send it or bring it with me.
I will be also carrying a suitcase full of catalogues from our museums here (Weltmuseum Wien, Kunsthistorisches Museum) - if you see a recent publication from them let me know.

My offer for Vienna still stands!

Hello!

I am not sure this is the right place to report my issue, but still…
All the sources from Lithuania are missing. I’ve been using
1. Lithuanian Union Catalogue
2. National Library of Lithuania
and both are “Auto detected as not working”
Could someone look into this? I would really appreciate it!

119johninvienna

More sources are still disappearing. Unfortunately those I did use a lot are no longer available. Many countries have disappeared from the sources list.
There are now 99 countries listed (and a few dependencies) out of 195 countries. And some very large ones have only one - usually insignificant - source or just AMAZON.

For example (population in parenthesis):
CHINA (1.5 billion) - only Amazon
EGYPT (over 100,000,000) - American University of Cairo
ETHIOPIA (120,000,000) - none
KOREA, REPUBLIC OF - (51,000,000) -Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (Eonyang-eup, Ulju-gun, Ulsan)
NIGERIA (220,000,000) - West Africa Theological Seminary (Lagos, LA)
VIETNAM (99,576,904) - none

and of course, dozens of smaller countries are now missing, e.g. Bhutan, almost all countries of Africa, former Yugoslavia (Serbia, North Macedonia, Montenegro, Kosovo), etc. etc.
If you open SOURCES, those countries listed with no sources, did at one time have some.

I know there are technical reasons for this - but not all is progress!
I always try to avoid MANUAL, but have to resort to it more and more.

JOHN
