Series

It is driving me crazy that my series are all out of order and if I have a Author with multiple series they are all mixed together! I have searched and searched for a secondary sort so my library can be sorted by Author>Series but I can not find one! There must be a way to do this somewhere! This would be a very serious oversight if there is no way to fix the way series are sorted.

Sorted where? On what screen? Using what settings? Can you give an example?

Try changing the display style of your library.

You can get a secondary sort in your catalogue in two ways.

Click on the sort icon (up and down arrows) and use the pop-up.

Click on top of the column you want as the subsort. It will sort by that. Then click on the top of the column you want as your main sort. This moves the previous sort to subsort.

In either case, you need the series and their order in a sortable column. Many people put series and order at the beginning of tags for that purpose. Remember that the numbers may have to be listed as 01 etc. to sort correctly.

Series number is not a separate field and Series is a multi-field so you cannot sort based on it (and if you could, series with more than 9 entries will become a problem).

You can use original publication date as a secondary sorting - and fix the values in CK where they come up strangely.

Or you can use one of the other fields (comments or the personal classification system) to set things so the series can be ordered per your preference.

>3 MarthaJeanne: has it. For authors with multiple series, you need to add a series indicator.

I think the heart of this problem is that the LT founder TIM is primarily a classics/non-fiction reader, and so the design philosophy didn't anticipate these sorts of issues.

I've added (from Settings in Your Books) a column called Other Call Number System which catalogues can be sorted by, and you create your own system. I had the same problem as you so I use 'author name and initial', 'series' and 'book number within the series'.

For example: I've given Komarr, which is the 12th book in the Vorkosigan series the label Bujold LM (Vorkosigan saga 12) 12/17 which allows me to sort my library by author, then by series and by order within the series so I can see what books I'm missing.

Be aware that the system sorts by the first digit, so put a 0 before single digits or you'll end up with 1, 11, 12 ... 2, 20, 21 etc.

How do I make my library only display the series I want for books? I do not need any in languages other than English.
