Can We Get a Feature to Increase the Results and Details Font Sizes?

Hi. We live in a senior living community and have cataloged most of the books from the 7 out of the 8 different community libraries on campus and are running a TinyCat catalog at: https://www.librarycat.org/lib/amvlibraries. Just boasting a little bit, we have over 8,000 scanned and entered books at this point.

I'm writing to know whether it is possible to provide a larger font for the search results and detail pages. I looked pretty carefully, and I don't think that it is available right now. A larger font would be advantageous for our seniors looking for books. I did use some HTML to provide X-Large type links into the 7 current collections and a bunch of genres for browsing in the readers want to search that way.

So, if a larger font setting feature is not available, can you implement it? We would be most grateful!!

Interesting suggestion, I will bring this up at our next meeting for TinyCat (scheduled later this week) and let you know if I have any update for you!

Most apps suffer from Young Developer Syndrome - Adobe's products are awful - their largest font can almost only be seen if you're under 40 or wear reading glasses.

I tried to make the font sizes at LT slightly bigger (by TWO pixels!) and the masses went into full hysterical apoplectic rage. So, yeah, it's not always the developers. :)

By the way, on nearly every browser you can use CNTRL-+ (control-plus or command-plus, depending on which computer) to make the fonts bigger. Most of them keep track of it on a per-site basis so you can have different enlargements on different sites.

Yeah, well that doesn't just make the font bigger, Chris, it makes the whole screen enlarge and sometimes squishing, rearranging and just plain weirdness occurs. But we work within the parameters we have.

Is the request for a specific viewing computer or a small group of them?

If so, there are some ways to approach this with the Stylus (replacement for Stylish who had some questionable data privacy practices) and a script file that changes the appearance of specific pages.

Different browsers and operating systems change what happens when you use command or control + and - so try two or three to see which gives the desired results. A factor in this is whether sizes are defined absolute or relative.

The size needs for a site varies by person so the solution should also reflect this. That is why site-wide changes can generate complaints.

>6 Bookmarque: I understand. Of course, we have a style picker for LT pages but we don't have that for TinyCat pages. We could add something like that without too much trouble, so I'll bring it up at the next dev meeting for TC.

>6 Bookmarque: >8 conceptDawg: In response to this, timspalding decided against it for now. We can maybe look at this another time, but it's low priority at the moment. Sorry for the trouble.

Seeing this reply was coincident with a different sort of project I'm engaged in which connects with the metal typefaces and sizes used on the juvenile series books produced by the Stratemeyer Syndicate. There were nearly 1,400 books produced between 1905 and 1985 and includes popular examples like Tom Swift, the Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew.

I am building a spreadsheet with many columns that show authorship and production details such as dates for certain milestones. But the part that connects with "fonts" and "sizes" are the columns that tabulate the number of chapters, text pages, the number of lines on full pages and first pages of chapters. In time I will add the width of the page lines (in picas). Ultimately the combination of these values is an indication of the length of the text in words or "ems" (characters placed for the purpose of billing).

Edward Stratemeyer had certain preferred typefaces for his own books and his Syndicate books. These include "Old Style No. 1", "Caslon Old Face", and "DeVinne". He did not like "Scotch Roman" as expressed in one letter. Typically they used 11 point type on 2 point leading. Some books for younger children were in larger type such as 12 on 2. Some of the stories for older readers used smaller type such as 10 on 2.

Nearly all of the publishers the Syndicate used were using a typesetting machine like a Linotype from Ottmar Merganthaler.

Once a typeface was selected, they generally stuck with it until a redesign was needed such as occurred with the Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew in the 1940s when Baskerville replaced DeVinne for the texts.

The selection of a typeface had a lot to do with the readability of the story and this is connected with readability on a computer screen such as a website. This includes the width of lines with the average number of characters in this proportional type.

>10 Keeline: Follow. LT is beyond me now which is a pity. Even “solutions “ don’t help. If decided to leave as it is just too frustrating.. it takes me an average of 20 mins to post as I can’t read what I type. Am looking into Apple as their philosophy encourages reaching out to all readers. The LT assumption is that we are all 20-20 and can see the right margins where LT stores the helpful info. But I can never see it, great app for the full sighted. Recommend if young and healthy.

>11 kjuliff: Almost any browser will allow you to increase the font size on a particular machine.

Some do this by holding Control or Command and typing the plus key.

Some also have a small and large capital A in the address bar which can increase or decrease by percentages.

Changing font sizes in specific areas requires a more technical ability and willingness to install a browser plugin.
