I read this book about 10ish years ago so I’d guess the suggested age group was preteen/ teen. There were repeated references to (and also passages of) the song Sweet Dreams by the Eurythmics. I can’t remember how old the protagonist was but I’d guess in the range 13-16, when she got angry one of the coping techniques she was taught in care was to tip her mattress up on its end and punch it.
I can’t remember much of the plot except she decided to run away (I think from her adoptive mum (or maybe adoptive parents) and orders Bacardi breezers from bars because that’s the only alcoholic drink she’s ever heard of).
From what I remember, she was really desperate to be adopted/ fostered by someone Irish ( I think in hopes of reuniting with her mum who abandoned her when she was younger).
I know it’s not a huge amount to go on but I’d appreciate any suggestions anyone has! Thanks for you help
