Children go across the country to Gramma’s house eating only potatoes.

I have often thought about this book that our teacher read to us in 4th grade. It was one of the books that impacted my life and I would really like to reread it.

It was a chapter book and the teacher read it around 1983.

What I remember is siblings (at least 2 but maybe 3) had to leave their parent’s house and travel across the country, by foot, to their Grandmother’s house. I’m not sure what happened to their parents. I believe the oldest female sibling pulled her younger sibling in a wagon. They had a limited amount of money and she was very careful with it. For food, she bought a bag of potatoes and that’s what they ate.

Getting to their Gramma’s house was an adventure but they did get there. I remember they started a new school and she told her teacher what happened. The teacher didn’t believe her because she said, “no one could survive eating just potatoes”.

If anyone can help me find this chapter book I would be extremely grateful.

Thank you.

Probably not Homecoming, it might be A Long Way To Go?

>2 Aquila: Could be the second book in the series; Dicey's Song. They have to do some sort of menu plan in Home Economics, and she writes about more or less living on peanut butter and bread, and the teacher says no-one could live off that. https://www.fantasticfiction.com/v/cynthia-voigt/tillerman-cycle/
