A Reminder About ER Policy

This is just a reminder that all members who participate in the Early Reviewers program are required to follow the rules, as set out on this page:

If you have not yet read through these rules—including the fine print!—it would be a good idea to do so now. I particularly want to draw your attention to the statement, in the Fine Print section, that books won are "for the recipient's own personal use and may not be sold."

Unfortunately, we have had to eject someone from the program, after it was brought to our attention that they were selling their ER copies online. This seems like an exceptional circumstance—I have not encountered it before—but I nevertheless wanted to be sure that everyone understands that we are serious about enforcing this policy.

Just for curiosity: is it allowed to give the book away for free? I can understand that an ebook must not be shared, but with physical copies maybe the situation is different. (Not that I ever got a paper book :-) )

>3 .mau.: I don't know the official position but I would think it would be ok to give it away as long as you don't make money on it. Somebody selling a cut - rate book before or shortly after release date would rightly upset the booksellers that the publisher deals with.

We were alerted to the situation by a complaint from a publisher, who found that the only other seller offering the book, leading up to the publication date, was one of their ER winners. We looked into it and discovered that it was a pattern. As teadladytoo mentions, something like this would really upset a publisher, to the point that, were we to do nothing to address it, they might not want to continue to participate in ER.

Hi everyone. I wanted to post in this thread again, just as a reminder that our rules do prohibit the sale of books won through ER. Unfortunately, I have had to eject a second member for this issue, after being alerted to the fact that they were selling their wins on ebay.

I believe that this is a very uncommon occurrence, but I thought I'd take the opportunity to remind everyone about our rules ( https://www.librarything.com/ner/rules ), and the fact that we do take them seriously.
