Since I’m shifting a few books in the living room, I got on my knees and did some rearranging of the books in the cases below the front windows. Seems they’d been stuffed in there with only a modicum of order. I can eliminate a few.

A Few Buttons Missing - probably bought because it references buttons. Instead he talks about “social sanitation” applied to psychopathic criminals.

Film The Boy in the Striped Pajamas - picked this up at the Friends of the Library and finally watched it. No surprises. Luscious photography. Notable quietly rounding up of the Jews, which emphasizes the willful blindness of the everyday German. I don’t need to keep it.

I’m grabbing handfuls of books lying about at the cabin to determine what to do with them.

Weddings Southern Style - I must have picked this up just after my daughter’s wedding, while I was still in a fever about them. You’d think the photos would be classical, but they do date from the early 1990s and ugh. Though there are portraits from a hundred years earlier that are sweet.

A Historical Atlas of the Jewish People the revised edition by Denis Charbit - wonderful illustrated book. I’m proud of myself that I can let it go. I will donate it to the college library.

I have a full sized bookcase at the cabin that I built to separate bathroom and bedroom. It’s got all sorts of miscellaneous books that I’ve acquired and never looked at. And then there are piles by the bed and in the living room.

I’ve been distributing discards to various locations, depending on their content, condition, etc. I met the Berea College library director and we exchanged contact information. He has a couple of pet projects he distributes books to. He is helping a woman’s shelter establish a small library and they need YA books. He is also planning a community library out in the county where he lives. The public library is a half hour drive for these rural families, and they just don’t bother mostly.

The college library is no longer taking DVDs, as the student laptops no longer have the capability to play them. They have DVD players for students to borrow when a film is assigned for classes. An odd conflict of technology and copyrights, as professors can no longer post links for the films. My teacher hosted Zoom movie nights instead.

The book items I thought students might like - mostly duplicate Kurt Vonnegut titles, I placed on a free to anyone shelf in the entryway. And my hand automatically reached for a tattered book entitled 40 Acres and No Mule. It’s a memoir of a couple who bought Kentucky ridgetop property in the early 1950s.😀

Starting September, I found another copy of
Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, this one illustrated by Edmund Dulac. I thought it might have value, but it seems there are many many copies out there.

The WV house will likely be broken into this winter. The back door has already been tried.
And if not by humans, the birds are scraping holes in the siding around the windows and gables to make warm nesting spots. They are already through to the attic.

So I need to accelerate my clean out. I’m going to Pittsburgh tomorrow, so this can’t be a big haul trip.
But I’m boxing the last living room collection from on top of the fireplace mantel. It’s specialized history books. Immigrants, women, slaves and labor history. I may house these at the ridgetop until I can read them again.

The Amazing Sacrament

Okay. Daughter says she is finally feeling at home in her new house. She had also asked me for the contents of the bookcase in the upstairs hall in the WV house. I’m there now. Time to clear the decks.
I’ve packed the left side of the long, short case (made by me to custom fit in that space). Got 57 books into the first box. I will not list them separately. They are my entire collection of paperbacks written by Isaac Asimov and Robert Heinlein as well as two Spider Robinson titles. The rest of Spider’s collection is already in Berea.

I’m temporarily holding back the 10 hardcover Asimov books from that shelf. I may dip into them this winter myself.

The other side of the case holds youth titles, some Newberrys. I hope to find a box to contain those today.

Shoot! I texted Rose about the books before realizing that today is her birthday.
This is possibly the first year I’ve not been included in both daughters’ days. (Anne's was Saturday.) Their spouses planned small trips for them.
I’ve spent the weekend trying not to feel lonely. It helped that Anne called Saturday and gushed for an hour about how much she loves and appreciates me. And Rose is coming to Berea on Friday.

I’ve got half a box of tattered books in front of me. One has a very pretty cover, but is missing the first 36 pages. Glancing through it, it’s not a particularly fine story. Mrs. Southworth wrote a lot of trash. I will use the cover on a cigar box instead.

I’ve also been winnowing boxes of other stuff; some papers and some fabrics. I’ve got a trash bag-sized pile to go to Goodwill tomorrow, and half a grocery bag of paper to recycle. I’ve been able to eliminate several boxes of stuff cluttering the upstairs bedroom.
I’m still searching for the plastic tub holding threads and needles. I have a button to sew on. Last I knew, it was in my bedroom. It got swept away somewhere in the last clean up.
I did re-discover the Rubbermaid bin under my bed holding Christmas gifts. I won’t forget that again.
Casually re-organizing the shelves in the basement as I go. That will become a main project this winter.

We had a set of My Bookhouse when I was growing up. Black I think. I'm guessing probably from the thirties. I spent quite a bit of time in that bookhouse.

I do like them, but I will choose Book Trails over them any day. It’s what I grew up with and I managed to acquire a full set for my kids; though they just aren’t as special to the younger generations who have so much other stuff to choose.
Book Trails does a better job moving through age appropriate materials and their illustrations are color saturated. Not to forget the handsome embossed red covers too.

The Book of J - Old Testament literary analysis. Bloom supposes that J is an educated female in Solomon’s court, not writing the stories down for a theological purpose. Significant only while I keep and read (despite the obnoxiously small print) Discovering Eve.

do you believe in magic? - interesting, but only in a personal sense. Possibly a good reference checking in on the generation in 1987. Bittersweet is the correct word.
Ancient Israel: Religious Institutions - scholarly but dry. I’ll take Margaret Barker.
Why be Catholic? - a primer that lacks the genius of Rohr’s typical writing.
