Problems with "search your library" for recently added titles

1jacobzink
Ago 8, 2021, 11:05 am

Today I have problems accessing relatively recently added titles. However if I try to type in the ISBN again to -"re-add" a title, I get the usual warning about duplicate ISBN.
I'm in the process of adding/changing covers on the books in my library, and I have already changed or added hundreds, within the last few days. Because I acquired a huge number of books for free from a bookstore (used books), which closed down recently, I have updated my LibraryThing library with thousands of books. I'm up to 9712 books.

And you are sure you are in ALL COLLECTIONS?

Site search? It may take some time for a new work to show in search, especially if you're the first one to enter any copy of it (but I don't know if that applies)

Searching your own library should work almost immediately though.

>1 jacobzink: Can you offer some examples of books for the developers to have an understanding of what's going on, please?

5jacobzink
Ago 8, 2021, 2:40 pm

It has been fluctuating a bit. At times I can't see a number of titles on either the website (my Library) nor on the app, but at other times I can see some titles on the website, but not on the app.
Three example are (and we are talking titles in Danish)
Jeppesen, Poul: Martins Kamp
Jeppesen, Poul: Den Tusinde Mand
Joelsson, A. G.: Sven fra Fyrrebakken.

The annoying thing is that I'm attempting to take pictures of the covers via the app, so even when I can see the titles on the website, I still can't add the covers to the titles through the app... by far the best method.

When you say "can see", what exactly do you mean? Do you mean they don't show up in search, or that even if you browse your catalog you don't see them? (It's very common for the search index to get behind, so that books added in the past day or two won't show up when you search, but that the titles still appear in your catalog.)

Also, since you say the titles are in Danish, are they exactly as you have typed them here, or are there any non-ASCII characters? Different handling of character sets between the site and the app has cropped up before, IIRC.

Ago 9, 2021, 12:03 pm

What I mean is that I can't see them, when I search for titles or ISBNs in "all catalogues", books that I know for a fact that I have registered in my "Library". At times, but not today, I can find the titles when logging on the website, but not in the LibraryThing app.

Let me see if I can come up with something solid for the developers.

Jeppesen, Poul: Martins Kamp

https://www.librarything.com/catalog/jacobzink&deepsearch=jeppesen
brings up five books, none of which is "Martins Kamp"

Looking here:
https://www.librarything.com/author/jeppesenpoul

And clicking on "Martins Kamp" gets us to here:
https://www.librarything.com/work/26901317

and

https://www.librarything.com/work/26901317/members

claims that jacobzink has the book. Which he hasn't.

I'm thinking that maybe this book got added and shortly afterwards deleted (by accident?).

>8 bnielsen: Another interesting tidbit, the system lists this as a manual entry.

10bnielsen
Modificato: Ago 10, 2021, 4:54 am

And "Den tusinde mand" is listed on the author page as owned by 3 members, but clicking on it shows only jacobzink and again it is nowhere to be found in his library.

>9 gilroy: where do you see is as a manual entry (not that I doubt it since only author and title seems to be filled in).

I wonder if jacobzink might (by mistake) have just changed the title of one book several times rather than having entered several books?
That would explain why there's only one book by Poul Jeppesen in his library but several titles listed on the author page.

Modificato: Ago 10, 2021, 8:01 am

>11 gilroy: Thanks!

And "Den tusinde mand" by Poul Jeppesen seems to be the same way as "Martins kamp". The author page is the only trace of it. If the book is deleted, the author page shouldn't say that one member has it.

It often takes a certain amount of time before the author and edition pages realize that a book has been deleted, edited, etc. But this is minutes, not days.

Something similar is happening to me. I've added books and they show up, but when I try to search for them, it says no results.

>16 Mnelsonaz: This could be a simple delay in the search index. Do you have a couple of examples of titles you've added recently and cannot find? You usually need to wait a couple of minutes (at least, sometimes longer if we're experiencing server delays) before searching newly-added items. I'm happy to look into this further with you.

ETA: just looking at your other report at https://www.librarything.com/topic/334329.

>17 kristilabrie:

I am also experiencing difficulty searching for items added to my library catalog today. A sample link is:

Dick Hamilton's Cadet Days

Perhaps it will be part of the search results when the servers catch up. I didn't see other threads discussing this issue though it seems as if there would be one.

I noted elsewhere that you thought it was fixed. It seems as though it has not been fixed.

I don't know where to look when you are having performance issues (i.e. a status board of some kind).

I did find that there was a message (that I have seen before) related to the issues with the Library of Congress. Though I suspect that this is displayed any time the requests to them time out.

I've had the same problem. The books I added in the last couple of days are searchable, but today's entries cannot be found either through the My Books page or through TinyCat.

I am assisting a number of people via email who are reporting similar troubles. Books being added, but then not coming up, when the member searches for them in their catalog. Attempting to add them again resulted in duplicate ISBN messages for one of them, just as described in the initial post here.

In at least two of these cases, the member's catalog shows that books have been entered, when looking at their catalog page on www, but the admin control panel in athena lists their catalog as standing at 0 items. I will check some of the people reporting this, here on the site, and see if I see any further examples of this.

I have not been able to duplicate this problem in my own account - I've added books, and been able to search for them by both title and ISBN, immediately - but will keep investigating.

ETA: I am on Chrome. I tested this in my test account, on Safari, and likewise had no trouble searching for a newly added book, both by title keyword and ISBN, immediately after entering.

Ago 13, 2021, 2:03 pm

OK. I'm not sure what this means, but I am noting this information here, and will pass this along to the developers.

jacobzink has the same # of books on his catalog page, as shown on the athena control panel.
Mnelsonaz has one more book on his catalog page, than listed on the control panel (133 vs. 132)
jerkwasser has 2750 books on his catalog page, and 2743 on the control panel
CSTJ-Library (another thread) has the same # on both
thebreadshoppe (another thread) has 1344 books on his catalog page, and 1306 on the control panel
NorthernlightsLib (email) currently has the same # on both, but an hour ago, had 0 listed on the control panel
LHW (email) has 8 books on his catalog page, and 0 on the control panel

I think I may have the same bug (or it's the missing work ID bug - or both) -

I've just added https://www.librarything.com/work/book/204710702 which appears with the correct relationships and myself as the only member. The series banner on the work details page is missing.

If I click on members, it takes me to https://www.librarything.com/work/26902021/summary with 53 members who aren't me.

If I try and combine, only the second work appears in the workbench.

I do have another edition of the title - https://www.librarything.com/work/2496648. The one I have just entered is a heavily expanded version of the first.

ETA: Looks like it's now indexed correctly. Must be server lag.

>33 Maddz: Hmm, did you do any combining of the first book you noted at https://www.librarything.com/work/book/204710702? I wonder if there's some sort of lag between your adding the book and it getting into the full work/details for https://www.librarything.com/work/26902021. (It seems sneakily similar to the missing work ID bug, though, rather than this.)

35Maddz
Ago 20, 2021, 10:27 am

>34 kristilabrie: I tried! But only one work appeared in the workbench whichever work I clicked on first, so I suspect server lag somewhere. I also tried deleting and reloading which didn't help either.

It was a case I wasn't seeing it in my catalogue or in the series list as being owned by me, and when I clicked on the 1 member work to edit my book details it it took me to the 53 member work which was uneditable for me because I wasn't showing as owning it.

Oh well, it's cleared up now and I'm correctly seeing 54 members with that work instead of 1.

I am encountering this issue today, December 18, 2023, with books that I have been adding to my collection this morning. I add them but then they do not come up in a search, neither in the app nor on desktop. However, on my "Add Books" page, I can see that they have been added and it is from this page only that I can access them to edit. I've seen this issue once before and I wonder when and why this happens that it takes the catalog so much time to update to make these entries searchable. And when will it be fixed? I did not have this issue last night.

37kristilabrie
Dic 18, 2023, 1:30 pm

There could simply be delays in the catalog indexing... try searching your newly-added books in an hour or so, and if you're still not able to find them let me know which titles you're having trouble searching? (I've just re-indexed your catalog, so let's see if that helps.)

38MarthaJeanne
Modificato: Dic 18, 2023, 1:41 pm

It is worth noting that searching your own catalogue and searching the site work differently. Searching your own catalogue usually works very quickly, but can take a few hours if the site is very busy, or the servers get out of step. Searching the site will get you to your newly entered book IF the work already exists and your copy is correctly combined. A book entered for the first time may take a day or even two before it can be searched in the site.

I have the same problem with a bunch of stuff I entered on 25-26November. It's still not showing up on search your library. I haven't had the chance to verify all the titles; I've been completely overwhelmed with incoming stock etc (this is a bookstore account). One title I know for an absolute fact is Unsub by Meg Gardiner, which I re-entered on the 28th, ISBN 1101985542. There should be two copies of the title when I search for her books but there is just the second one. It is, however, listed under "Your other editions" when I click for the details. When I realized there was a problem I spot-checked a few of the titles I remembered entering that day and none of them showed up. I don't have the mental capacity to deal with it right now so I'm just muttering profanity to myself at random. I must have entered 100 books that day so... yeah.

>39 BookHavenAZ: I'm spot-checking books you added on 11/25-26 and they look okay to me, it must be with spotty. Here's a couple examples that are working for me:

1. "the wench is dead" added 11/25 - found ( https://www.librarything.com/catalog/BookHavenAZ?&deepsearch=the%20wench%20i... ), same with "0330313363" ( https://www.librarything.com/catalog/BookHavenAZ?&deepsearch=0330313363 )
2. "dark aura" added 11/26 - found ( https://www.librarything.com/catalog/BookHavenAZ?&deepsearch=dark%20aura ), same with "0425228835" ( https://www.librarything.com/catalog/BookHavenAZ?&deepsearch=0425228835 )

Looking at your example, I can view your authors sub-page in "Your books" and click on Meg Gardiner to find both of your editions of "UNSUB" ( https://www.librarything.com/catalog.php?view=BookHavenAZ&author=gardinermeg... finds both https://www.librarything.com/work/19000330/book/253439961 and https://www.librarything.com/work/19000330/book/253281113), but for some reason I cannot find both copies if I search manually for "meg gardiner", "unsub", or even "1101985542".

We may need to reindex your library, but you have over 130K records... let me check on this tomorrow to make sure it's good to run.
