Field for book edition

I've started collecting antique books, mostly academic books. Some of them have several editions (I have one book in first and second editions), and it would be nice if there is a field where I can specify that.

You can specify that in the publication field.

You can also just put it in the title. If you have more than one edition of the same book putting it in the title would be the easiest way to tell them apart.

>3 norabelle414: Except it isn't part of the title. The English and Scottish Popular Ballads, Vol. 2 of 5: The Child Ballads (Forgotten Books) isn't the title. I would second the publication field.

In books that have had many editions over the years, enough that separating them out into different works makes sense, having the edition information in the title can be helpful.

>4 Cynfelyn: People put edition information into the title field all the time. It's not uncommon, and it doesn't hurt anything.

>4 Cynfelyn: That's not an edition, though. That's a volume. Different than an edition.

Trying to keep the title field restricted to the actual title is hopeless other than in your own library. Unfortunately, Amazon data puts all sorts of series names and other impertinent labels in there.

I scrape away non-title chaff whenever I'm editing, and haven't ever felt hopeless about it! Looks much cleaner...

(I vote for the publication field.)

>9 dhm: Using a library source, rather than Amazon you won't have to scrape it away. As for the field, publication field is the designated field for that, but people who have several editions of a work sometimes find it easier to distinguish between them by putting it in the title. I've seen even stuff like SOLD in the title. It only affects that members data and if edited after adding the book, it should still auto-combine properly

As do I. But that only keeps my own catalog clean. There's plenty of chaff in the work-level records I'll never see, and sometimes in ones I do, and I don't worry about it.

Also holding out for this field! Virtually my entire library is academic works, so I deal with this frustration a lot. Generally I've just been using the comments field to keep track of the edition.

edit: Also, I am constantly frustrated by the 'chaff' in fields that destroys the utility of the combined Works information.
