https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/tucker-carlson/2021/07/13/398fa720-dd9f-... is an interesting article on Carlson. It just seems so typical, like at the start, when he says “It wasn’t obvious to me at the time. The idea that I’d be responsible for the sins (or, for that matter, share in the glory of the accomplishments) of dead people who happened to share my skin tone has always confused me. Racial solidarity wasn’t a working concept in my southern-California hometown.” He seems to glory in the accomplishments of America enough, surely he could accept the sins thereof, or just accept the tragedy that was slavery.

Carlson is a silver spoon provocateur. He’s making millions off of the resentments of mostly poorer white people who have never and will never have his wealth or privilege. Basically a scumbag.

Apparently, his birth mother's abandoning the family when he was a youngster continues to haunt him to this day. TC is a very damaged and dangerous dude. He is a menace to our society on a daily basis. One can just imagine what he would be ranting about Dr. Salk's vaccine if this was the polio-outbreak era. Alas, he is also the face and voice of the despicable modern-day GOP.

Any damaged dude can cultivate a large cult following in this Internet era.

Turns out Fox has a strict covid-19 policy. If you’ve returned to work at Fox you have two choices. 1) the vaccinated can walk around their building and more than less do whatever they please like pre-covid 2) the unvaccinated have to wear masks and social distance.

So the vaccine deniers Carlson and Ingraham in particular are vaccinated.

Tucker Sucks Up To Victor Orban

The Trump-Putin bromance may be over, but Carlson, Trump's #1 stand-in for fascist ideological advertising, is kindling a new bromance with Hungary's destroyer of democracy. Tucker Talker is already milking his budding relationship into a series of Faux News self-aggrandizing TV shows broadcast from Hungary that will romanticize the dictator and his tyrannical manner of governing. After all, Orban's a good ol' white guy.
Anne Applebaum
@anneapplebaum

In Orban's Hungary, +90% of media is controlled by the ruling party. Businesses are physically and legally harassed if they don't toe the party line (or if someone wants them, cheap). Elections are manipulated. Party leaders are mysteriously rich. A model for Fox?
Sounds just like Trump's style of leading a country. No wonder T. Talker has fallen hard and fast.

Lefties hate Tucker Carlson because he's so effective. See his latest on Afghanistan https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wi5caA2VbJo ... devastating, although he scores some cheap points in trying to blame 'wokeness' for our defeat. The ridiculous woke nonsense was just the icing on the cake ... nothing could have made Afghanistan into a modern society, although it's possible that we might have stabilized it by going along with the Loya Jirga's wish to restore the king. But as for bringing liberal democracy there ... we can't even bring civilization to South Chicago, much less Afghanistan.

But even better is Mark Steyn: https://www.steynonline.com/11605/dead-superpower-walking

But ...it has to be said .. neither of these fellows opposed invading Afghanistan or iraq at the time ... although Steyn was properly skeptical about the attempt to turn the place into Belgium.. As he put it, "There will be no Lesbian Outreach Centers in Kandahar." (And now, no lesbians either. At least not out of the closet.) Speaking of which, I'm surprised our government, which is admonishing the Taliban to incude women in their new government, has not also demanded that they include homosexuals and transgenders. C'mon guys ... still in the grops of heteronormativity?

And, despite Steyn's acknowledgement that the US (with Western Civilization dragging along behnd) is on the road to oblivion -- or at least transformation into something hideously unrecognizable, probably a combination of Mexico and Nigeria -- neither he nor Carlson propose anything effective to try to rescue some fragment of the real America from the coming collapse. That would probably be incompatible with maximizing ratings. Still, lots of fun to read.

In the meantime, prudent patriots will make sure they own the necessary tools, before these are outlawed.

>22 Doug1943: Lefties hate Tucker Carlson because he's so effective.

At spreading lies. You don't even respond to the point that his defense in court was that no reasonable person would have believed him.

we can't even bring civilization to South Chicago, much less Afghanistan.

I wish that racists would stop denying it so much.

as for bringing liberal democracy there ... we can't even bring civilization

Biden won the election, with seven million votes, and Republicans have done their best to tell those seven million voters that their votes don't matter. Tucker Carlson read with approval a document that explained that the Trump-voters don't feel they have representation, and therefore should have the presidency despite losing 74-81. Go liberal democracy!

Also, you're using civilization here in its pejorative sense, where uncivilized is "does things differently and won't do things differently just because we tell them to". Again, Western Civilization has spent millennia in careful understanding and even hair-splitting; it's amazing how people pound on it and don't yet don't care about its teachings.

Speaking of which, I'm surprised our government, which is admonishing the Taliban to incude women in their new government, has not also demanded that they include homosexuals and transgenders. C'mon guys ... still in the grops of heteronormativity?

It's amazing how the Right so often bangs on Western Civilization and yet instead of resorting to logic and rhetoric that Western Civilization honed over 2500 years prefers to engage in unproductive cheap shots.

the US (with Western Civilization dragging along behnd)

Right, because Europe is just going to collapse without the US.

In the meantime, prudent patriots will make sure they own the necessary tools, before these are outlawed.

So twice in US history, government forces have bombed (non-Native American) civilian people on the ground. Nobody has suggested that somehow more guns in Tulsa (1921) or Philadelphia (1985) would have helped the people bombed.

To go back once again to Ashli Babbitt’s death—the enraged mob in the hallway outside the House Chamber were on the verge of busting through as that idiot Paul Gosar was perorating all kinds of bullshit before a full house. Inside the chamber were other security with handguns drawn. Babbitt being the first one through a busted out window was not shot in the head point blank but in the shoulder. It wasn’t an intended kill shot. It did accomplish giving that enraged mob some second thoughts. A lot of them were all for revolution but they had more in mind taking selfie’s than actually dying that day for their cause. But if they had gone through those doors they would have met more guns and people would have been hurt or more killed perhaps even some Republican congressmen/women. The ability to differentiate in high adrenaline like situations is much much lower than in normal situations.

My take / the true Murdoch mission ~
Tucker has NOT gone rogue. R. Murdoch is on a mission to light a fire under GOP reps and office holders during this very important election cycle. It appears that R. Murdoch allowed three despicable men ~ Roger Ailes / Bill O'Reilly / Tucker Carlson ~ to turn the workplace at FOX News into a toxic cesspool for women who had work assignments there. This conservatives-running-amuck period lasted for over 25 years ~ from 1996 until this week. Murdoch commissioned Ailes to create the FOX News Network, and Ailes hired Bill and Tucker. Those actions covered the whole lifespan of Murdoch's news network!

I hope FOX News pays (Owen Jones) "O.Jo" a fortune. That shall hasten the way to bankruptcy and ruin for this particular News-entertainment entity of Murdoch's. (I guess the rest of Murdoch's FOX businesses--as entertainment--won't be effected one way or the other.)

It shall also afford a welcome practical lesson in the differences between a Tucker Carlson and O.Jo. If Jones gets and holds 1/20th of Carlson's peak audience, I'll be surprised. I don't think American audiences shall warm to Jones. The more they get to know him, the less they'll like what they see and the faster he'll be dropped & ignored.

Of the two of them, Carlson took a path of gradually shedding more and more of his earlier doctrinaire character while Jones has gone the opposite route. Choosing as a nightly news anchor at Fox News any British person--man or woman-- is an amazingly brain-dead idea. There's almost nothing about Britain today which a FOX network's audience would find admirable. And they're right. In British journalism, there's no organ which pretends to be a serious news operation which is a bigger or more pathetic joke than The Guardian and its parent group, Scott, from which shit-hole Jones is moving.

..."the rampant transphobia,"

Your delusion. You'd obviously not choose to live in such a place--so I gather that you don't, haven't and have no idea WTF you're talking about. "Trans" people in Britain may not be particularly liked outside the boundaries of their own peculiar little culture's "bubble", but, alas, this rampant dislike you keep for comfort as a chip on your shoulder is mainly in your mind. There'd be plenty of reasons people in Britain--about whom you know only what your favored press feeds you-- might have for not particularly liking you and those needn't have anything to do with any "trans" self-identification per se. There's no "rampant 'transphobia'" going on outside your fevered imagination of that.

....."shocking cruelty to immigrants,"

(Some) immigrants to Britain are treated to "shocking cruelty"?
Then why don't they just leave and go back to wherever the hell they came from? No one should try to stop them--and no one would miss them when they left.

"islamophobia,"

Again, you don't know WTF you're talking about. I see no evidence of any rash of wealthy Muslems--who surely can and do choose where they live or spend their leisure time-- either quitting Britain for more agreeable locales or avoiding visits to Britain; (for the rest, the "non-wealthy", it's "life's" "tough-luck" if they were born in Britain and find themselves "stuck" there.) But, regarding those wealthy, they'd certainly do that (leave) if there was this "rampant islamophobia" you imagine--akin to the "transphobia" you also imagine. Both are grotesque misnomers and corruptions of the English meaning of "phobia". "Phobia" is not a synonym for "disgust" or "revulsion" at some individual's or group's peculiar adopted characteristic behaviors of their choice.

"economic austerity,"

Yeah, about that: there'd be more in Britain to go around in the provision of a thriving economy if that country weren't trying to take in every people-smuggling trafficker's dispatch of channel-crossing boat-people from the third-world's failed states.

Where Lefties Fear to Read...

On Race and Crime, a Counterfactual Narrative : The notion that blacks are at elevated risk for “existing while black” is true—but not because whites are killing them.
| by Heather Mac Donald | "Eye on the News" section of City Journal (from the Manhattan Institute, New York)

... ...
Despite the numerous trespass shootings that have been reported on since the Yarl shooting, the (New York) Times remains staunchly committed to its racism narrative. On April 24, the paper ran an article on how the Yarl shooting revealed the persistence of racism in Kansas City. Never mind that the city’s majority-white population had thrice elected a black mayor and had sent a black representative to Congress. That cross-racial voting just shows how “like this veil of (white) nicety and smiles . . . kind of overlays microaggressions and all kinds of crazy stuff,” the founder of a nonprofit that seeks to empower black women told the paper.

The narrative that blacks are at elevated risk for “existing while black” is true, but not because whites are killing them. Their assailants are other blacks, which means that these black victims are of no interest to the race activists and to their media and political allies.

Kansas City’s black-white homicide disparity is typical. In 2022, blacks made up 60 percent of homicide victims, though they are 26.5 percent of the population. Whites were 22 percent of homicide victims, though they make up 60 percent of the Kansas City population. A black Kansas Cityean was six times more likely to be killed in 2022 than a white Kansas Cityean. So far this year, blacks make up 75 percent of homicide victims.

The toll on black children has been particularly acute. In the first nine months of 2020, 13 black children were killed in shootings in Kansas City. Those child victims included one-year-old Tyron Patton, killed when someone riddled the car in which he was riding with bullets, and four-year-old LeGend Taliferro, fatally shot while sleeping in his father’s apartment. No Black Lives Matter activist showed up to “say their names.” Imani Perry did not weigh in on the “terror and grace of raising Black children in the United States.” Their deaths were again of no interest to the race advocates because their killers were black. In 2022, ten children aged 17 and younger were killed in Kansas City, also without racial protest, because those children were not killed by whites and thus did not matter from a racial PR perspective. The maudlin dirge that blacks are victims of lethal white supremacy is ludicrous, in Kansas City and every other American metropolis.

Though no concrete evidence of a race component in the Yarl-Lester shooting has emerged, if Lester were scared by Yarl, if he were someone who “clearly, clearly fears Black people,” as Mayor Lucas put it, that fear would not be irrational. In Kansas City, blacks make up 72 percent of homicide suspects whose race is known. Whites make up 18 percent of homicide suspects whose race is known (and a higher portion of white homicides is the result of domestic violence rather than of street crime). If a stranger shows up at a Kansas City house at night, there is a nine times higher chance that that stranger will commit a homicide if he is black than if he is white.

... ...

If blacks kill at nine times the rate of whites in Kansas City but die of homicide at only six times the rate of whites in Kansas City, what makes up the difference? Blacks killing people outside their own race. That disparity applies to non-lethal as well as to lethal violence. In 2021, 87 percent of all non-lethal interracial violent crimes committed between blacks and whites in the U.S. were black-on-white—480,030 incidents with a black offender and white victim, and 69,850 incidents with a white offender and black victim, or seven times as many black-on-white as white-on-black incidents of interracial non-lethal violence. In other words, whites have more to fear from blacks than blacks from whites, a fact contrary to the race-hustle narrative.

The distribution of interracial violence means that an “X-ing while white” meme is a more appropriate way of representing racial crime patterns. Recent instantiations of the “while white” meme would include: “accosting shoplifters while white” (California Home Depot employee fatally shot while trying to prevent a theft); “reporting on a crime while white” (Florida journalist fatally shot working the scene of a homicide investigation, cameraman critically injured in same shooting); “riding the subway while white” (two 19-year-old females punched and robbed on Times Square subway by larger group of females wearing dayglo green body suits); “bicycling while white” (California emergency room doctor run over and fatally stabbed by man who reportedly had complained about “white privilege”); “jogging while white” (young Memphis mother abducted, raped, and killed); “walking downtown while white” (Minneapolis man thrown to the ground, stomped on, stripped of pants, run over with a bicycle, hit with planters, and robbed by group of teens); “holding on to one’s wallet while white” (Minneapolis man beaten unconscious after refusing to give up his wallet in attempted robbery); “walking in school hallway while white” (New Jersey ninth-grader punched, kicked, and hit with water bottle in high school, later commits suicide); “existing in school while white” (Florida girl beaten in head by five females); “riding a city bus while white” (57-year-old female hit in the head with an unknown object on a Queens bus by two teenage girls and a third individual); “riding a school bus while white” (12-year-old boy in Virginia choked by female classmate).

If any of these incidents had had black victims and white perpetrators, there would have been a national, if not international, uproar. Every news outlet would be covering the emergency of white supremacy and Joe Biden would have given another of his speeches about the stain of white racism on America’s soul." ...

>56 proximity1: immigrants... Then why don't they just leave and go back to wherever the hell they came from?

You obviously know nothing about the oppression and hardship which causes people to make the difficult and dangerous decision to flee from their own countries. Most of them can't go back safely, even if they wanted to.

no one would miss them when they left

That's absolute rubbish. For a start, I know a lot of people who have befriended immigrants, even fallen in love and married them. And now that Britain has left the EU and also begun imposing new, harsher and possibly illegal measures on non-EU migrants, we are seeing first hand how we miss those immigrants - in the National Health Service, in scientific research, on farms, driving lorries, paying taxes, taking care of our elderly, revitalising our churches, playing in our professional football teams, paying for education in British universities, etc, etc.

Islamophobia is real in the UK. And note that an ever-increasing proportion of the Muslims in UK are not immigrants, they are born and bred British citizens. As British Indian comedian Yusuf Islam quips, "People say to me, 'Go back to where you came from!' I reply, 'No! I don't like Birmingham!"'

As for economic austerity,"Yeah, about that: there'd be more in Britain to go around in the provision of a thriving economy" if we had a government that had a clue how to run a healthy economy for the good of all instead of pandering to the wealthy.

The bland food reminds me of the Goodness Gracious Me sketch Going for an English.

>58 pnppl: canned beans on toast

I have a terrible confession to make - I like baked beans on toast! It was a staple diet of my childhood and youth. Much as I love the food in Kenya, Sudan and all the other places I've been privileged to enjoy cross-cultural experiences, I always keep a few tins of beans in the larder "for emergencies" (that's a phrase I picked up from my parents who went through the war and who, in the post-war austerity period, always kept the cupboard well stocked with tinned food) and I try to eat beans on toast at least once a fortnight as a comfort food to remind me of my roots!

Exactly. This is one of the things I see about conservative anti-diversity concepts; it's never okay to bash them, it's just okay to bash others.

Yeah, about that: there'd be more in Britain to go around in the provision of a thriving economy if that country weren't trying to take in every people-smuggling trafficker's dispatch of channel-crossing boat-people from the third-world's failed states.

You know what "the third-world's failed states" used to be called? The British Empire. The UK conquered half the world, and then abandoned all those states in the aftermath of WWII, neglecting any obligation to set up stable governments. There'd be less to go around in Britain if they hadn't dragged all the profits from all those nations for centuries.

>56 proximity1: I don't have a lot to add to >57 John5918:'s reply, except to say that he's a lot nicer about it than I would have been.

However, I wanted to call this one out:

There'd be plenty of reasons people in Britain--about whom you know only what your favored press feeds you-- might have for not particularly liking you and those needn't have anything to do with any "trans" self-identification per se. There's no "rampant 'transphobia'" going on outside your fevered imagination of that.

I would like to hear more about this. What are the reasons that you think Brits would have for "not particularly liking" trans people? And how do those "reasons" differ from rampant transphobia in your mind?

Both are grotesque misnomers and corruptions of the English meaning of "phobia". "Phobia" is not a synonym for "disgust" or "revulsion" at some individual's or group's peculiar adopted characteristic behaviors of their choice.

So you're saying that Muslims and trans people would get along just fine if they chose to be someone other than who they are? Okay, let's try that the other way around. You're walking down the street one day and someone steps up and punches you in the face because you chose to be who you are. You're okay with that? Or is that a problem for you?
After all, if they don't like the way you are, you should change, right?

Which pretty much scuppers your statement that nobody will miss them if they leave. Immigrants are performing all sorts of essential roles in the UK, and the "first, second, or third-generation off-spring of what was once immigrant labor" are native-born British citizens just like me so they're exempt from your rant in any case.

It's always interesting to me to hear someone claim that immigrants are a drag on the economy, because that tells me that that person has no idea how free markets work.

Quick recap for those slow on the uptake: when someone works for wages, they produce value - that's why they get paid wages. They collect some of that value as their salary, their employer collects some of it in profits, and the people who partake of the end product of that labor collect loads of it in terms of access to goods that they would otherwise not have access to. Anyone working for wages is producing value, and society in general benefits from their labor more than they do. Upshot: immigrants come to your country to make you richer, and without them you are much worse off.

So, if you believe in free markets, you actually want more immigration, not less. (Yet another example of why it's probably not a good idea to just parrot what you're told to say by some asshat on your television - if you do that, you end up saying all sorts of inane things)

(I remember listening to one particularly inane case, who had learned his lessons probably a bit too well, trying to explain that he was against "lazy immigrants who won't work and just come here to take our jobs"... I got the sense he knew there was something wrong with what he was saying, but he couldn't work out exactly what it was...)

72proximity1

Suppose an immigrant comes--or a lot of immigrants come into your town, under-cut some man's or a lot of men's wages, taking their jobs, then he sends or they send the bulk of that money off to some third-world shit-hole to support his family or to support their families; suppose then that he or they moon-light selling methamphetamines or crack cocaine to that now-out-of-work man's kids--the kids of those whose jobs they took-- and, to top things off, while drunk, this job-stealing, drug-dealing immigrant, happens upon our now-jobless man's daughter as she's walking home from studying late at the library and abducts and rapes her. The next day, he's back at the job he took--

Well, in your fucked up minds, these immigrants deserve all they can get however they can get it because in some calculus of yours, this is all part of "payback" for historical wrongs done to their now-dead-and-gone ancestors.

And we should all feel ashamed of ourselves for that history and make "amends" by voting for Joe Biden; and, you want this man and his wife, their livelihoods lost to the ramifications of your twisted virtue-signalling bullshit's logic, to vote for Joe Biden--Biden, himself a man "self-made" on fucking grift and a career in political corruption peddling influence, with his son well-advanced in that same trade.

You lot disgust me.

73kiparsky
Modificato: Apr 27, 2023, 7:53 pm

>72 proximity1: Again, your complete ignorance of how free markets actually work is on full display. This actually sounds a lot like the "lazy immigrants who won't work and just want to take our jobs", only this time it's "greedy immigrants who come here to get rich by working for as little money as possible so they can make people poorer".

Think it through for a moment. Do you really think immigrants don't want to maximize their wages? Do you think someone works under the table in a sweatshop for low wages because they like it, or do you think it's somehow a thing they prefer to do because of where they came from? No, even you, prox, cannot be so abysmally stupid that you'd believe such foolishness. Or maybe you can, you are full of surprises. But the answer is, no they would love to make more money. So why don't they make more money? The answer is: because immigration law prevents them from working legally in this country, which means they form a segment of the working class that is not protected by wage and hour laws and other labor protections, and they are generally not represented by labor unions.
What this means is, employers who want to minimize their spend on wages now have an option, which is to hire people under the table to do hard and usually very dangerous work for little money, with none of the benefits that American workers expect. This is what undercuts wages: it's not the immigrants, it's the fact that they've been forced into a second-class segment of the working class.
What is the effect of this? It lowers wages for the workers that you want to seem to be concerned about.

So, the upshot? Treating immigrants as second-class workers creates a reserve supply of low-cost labor. Not treating immigrants as second-class workers would allow them to seek to maximize their wages, which is what you want if you don't want workers' wages to be undercut.

As for "taking jobs", we've been over that before, but once again: when people work for wages, they create wealth, and creating wealth creates jobs. If you don't believe that then you need to review your commitment to capitalism. If you do believe that, you don't believe what you've said above. Take your pick, and let us know what you end up with.

Now, if you prefer to remain ignorant, feel free to keep talking, but it seems like that's not doing you a lot of good at the moment, and you might want to take this opportunity to shut up and go learn a thing about economics.

men's wages
By the way, I expect this will come as a surprise to you because I'm pretty sure you haven't talked to a woman in a while, but women are actually working these days.
And also by the way, learning to see women as human beings might help with that getting laid problem of yours. #pro-tip

Tucker Carlson has millions of fans but he doesn't change any equations as far as bringing in voters. If anything he might even help to lose some for the republican ticket. So many conservatives these days think all that's needed is celebrity and a bit of notoriety. It's not really a formula for success. Trump as someone with no real political record won the electoral vote but lost the popular vote by almost 3 million to a not very popular Hilary Clinton in 2016. Running on his 4 years of ineptitude, corruption and incompetence then he lost by over 7 million to a not very popular Joseph Biden in 2020. Trump had plenty of celebrity and notoriety by then and it didn't help him at all.

His former viewers are already primed to believe his hogwash, and they will most likely be willing to pay for the privilege of being subscribers to whatever profit-making scheme he devises. I Taped A Show With Tucker On Censorship Right Before He Was Fired |
By Stella Morabito | The Federalist (Washington, D.C.) | April 27, 2023

"A few weeks ago, I had the great honor of sitting down with Tucker Carlson for an hour-long interview. As of his departure from Fox News this past Monday, the interview had not yet aired on his Fox Nation show Tucker Carlson Today. It will probably never see the light of day.

"This pains me not only personally, but because I believe our discussion was critical to helping more people grasp the human dynamics that lead to the mass misery, loneliness, and dystopian policies we see all around us today. More people must understand that destructive agendas depend upon the human impulse to self-censor. When we shut up or lie about what we believe in hopes of 'fitting in,' we give abundant oxygen to tyrannical agendas.

"But with the exit of Carlson, Fox News is a huge step closer to declaring that it’s completely on board with the media monopoly’s efforts to create the illusion of unanimity of thought. Such illusions are meant to tease out the conformity impulse by making us feel all alone in our views, and, therefore, less likely to express them.

"This is the essence of my book, The Weaponization of Loneliness: How Tyrants Stoke Our Fear of Isolation to Silence, Divide, and Conquer. How ironic that my conversation with Carlson — about the very ability of human beings to have conversations in this era of censorship — has been silenced in the wake of his silencing on Fox. And yet it’s entirely in line with my thesis about social isolation as a political weapon. The goal is to cut us off from information and, ultimately, to cut us off from one another until we are completely atomized and socially controlled." ... ...

For me, some of this misses the point. First, while, yes, "self-censorship" is not only going on but perhaps an increasingly common phenomenon, it is the intended by-product of outright censorship first. That primary censorship would not magically vanish as a goal even if there was not also the coincidental advantage to the censors of promoting self-censorship with the imposition self-censorship. The general objective is always one and the same: to make the expression of unorthodox, unconventional opinion--opinion which does not enjoy the approval of the powerful groups which set and direct the national agendas in politics and social affairs. That people commonly fear punishment, that people commonly are, in many matters of daily life, moral cowards--these are simply long-recognized facts of human nature and, for that reason, are seized on for the utility they present to censors. Censorship has always relied more on the fear of being punished than it does on actual punishments --making "examples" of those who don't "self-censor".

It's no more likely to be useful or effective to exhort people with "Don't self-censor!" than it is to exhort them with calls of "Don't be a moral coward! Speak! Resist censorship! Defend civil liberties!"

To pose the issue in that way--that we have a "self-censorship" "problem"-- somewhat annoys me. We have a "moral cowardice" "problem" of large proportions. This has the secondary effect of promoting a "be 'safe' by not 'rocking the boat'" mentality. It fosters everything of a conventional, conformist character and is inimical to everything opposite of these. But this is inherent in human nature, not some recent surprising discovery about how to cow people into conformist-seeming silence.

Next, it is hardly to be believed that the present oppressively liberal-driven conformist conventional stupidity is not very well understood in its noxious effects by those suffering under it. There is simply little or no danger that great numbers of people are going to fail to "make the connection," "connect the 'dots'" which link social anomie, alienation, feelings of isolation, and their concurrently feeling thoroughly unwelcome to express themselves freely--if they were ever so inclined in the first place.

..."helping more people grasp the human dynamics that lead to the mass misery, loneliness, and dystopian policies we see all around us today. ...

--is not the source of the problem. Those "dynamics" are abundantly well-understood. It requires no special training or experience to grasp them. People naturally feel disgusted by others' authoritarian repression of them unless they are psychopaths.

Our circumstances illustrate the difference between forcing people into virulently hostile opposing ideologies and simpy wantonly feeding, fanning, the flames of an abundantly already-made inclination to separate into fiercely antagonistic groups which harbor and express ever-more violent expectations of their opposition--which tends to feed a vicious cycle. No such "force" or "coercion" is required. People today are eagerly inclined to separate themselves into groups where they are met with near-unanimity of opinion. That tendency, a fully natural one, is what promoters of a hardening of socially-divisive and mutually-hostile thinking use for its long-established effectiveness. The woeful absence of sound critical-thinking abilities is what feeds and sustains this, not some "otherly" diabolical program to force people into to practicing the stupidest of socially self-destructive behaviors.

"Self-censorship" has always fed on fear. And people are born and naturally inclined to be afraid--and self-harmfully stupid. Courage and intelligence in the face of threats and stupidity must be learned as a counter-force. To oppose and thwart that learning of that key factor in myriad ways, subtle and blatant--that happens to also be "the" predominant characteristic relied on here in this site's discussion-fora-- used and relied on for all it's worth in the imposition of conformist behavior.

... "Any objective person can see that Carlson’s boldness and passion for the truth is a refreshing oasis in the vast desert of lies produced in lockstep by the propaganda media. Even if he wasn’t always correct, he thought for himself and spoke up. What a great tonic for our times. I believe that’s the ultimate reason he was let go." ...

Rather, any person, "objective" or not, "can see ... Carlson’s boldness and passion". For those who, as I do, agree with Carlson in much of what he's bold and passionate about, those matters are seen as "refreshing". For those who despise Carlson's views and loathe him for his effectiveness, that same boldness and passion is cause for a desire to see him silenced. Of course "that’s the ultimate reason he was let go (forced out)."

Biden hammered Carlson and Fox at the correspondents dinner last night. It was really funny, kind of puts the lie that he's suffering from dementia to rest because he fired these zingers off with some aplomb such as 'Last year Fox journalists attended because they were fully vaccinated and boosted. This year they're here because they can't afford to turn down a free meal.' Or this one 'I had a lot of DeSantis jokes ready but Mickey Mouse got there first'.

Dominion settled roughly for half of what they were suing Fox for. If Smartmatic get half of what they're suing for that would be around $1.3 billion. They're using the same evidence that Dominion has + probably a little more and they're going to win too. So these settlements together could be in the $2 billion range unless Fox wants to take this next one all the way in court. It's also not just the money.....it's the perception of what Fox is paying out to make these lawsuits go away. Maybe it doesn't mean much to a lot of the Fox News audience but everyone else sees and what they see looks like Fox saying 'we were guilty'.

Waterworld and John Carter are infamous box office bombs, but combined they didn't cost that much to make (inflation adjusted) (no single movie has, and only five movies have cost half that much ever) and it's not like the companies threw the movies in the trash; they released and sold many tickets and DVDs.

I'm surprised they settled for that much; Fox could have won with the right jury members, and certainly could have dragged it out with appeals for years. Perhaps they didn't want the public to see what the trial was going to bring out into the open.

What's more, they've got another case that's basically the same. Is Fox willing to pay out the same amount twice? One reason companies don't settle is because it makes them look weak, and they don't want to be dealing with an endless stream of libel suits by people looking to settle.

Now, their same reasoning strategies apply in other realms, other kinds of gambles. They clearly made a calculated guess as to their interests in contesting a suit or settling out of court. That decision might have but needn't have been determined solely on their expectations of a court victory or defeat.

Companies settle out of court every day of the week despite there being a strong opinion among their execs. that the case (at hand) could be won (decided in their favor) in court. Juries in such cases needn't be "fair"--they can easily be vindictive, angry, out to teach the plaintiff or the defendant "a lesson". Juries are groups of people. People are often highly emotional, irrational and hard to predict with high confidence. That has nothing to do with the merits of a case-- and this is just as true in criminal trials as it is in trials for civil damages. The remark by a state or federal prosecutor is the stuff of legend and TV legal dramas: that a particular case has some very good evidence to demonstrate the defendant(s)' guilt don't go to trial for all sorts of reasons: more cheaply won plea bargains--which aren't a "roll-of-the-jury-dice", the costs in time and resources of going to trial vs. all the other pending cases; public sentiment at any given moment--irrespective of the good evidence for conviction.

Go stay in your fantasy world. Leave real life to others whose reasoning isn't a fucking joke.

>90 lriley: At $2 billion, Fox's C team is starting to see the downsides of having a "no holds barred" star in the newsroom. It's not like the Alec Jones situation, where it's mostly just one guy shooting his mouth off. Jones can run and hide, but Fox is a bit too big for that. So presumably canning Carlson was the first move, and hiring a nonentity replacement is the next, and what we're going to see is that they run a lot tighter ship going forward.
They're still going to be a propaganda mill, naturally, but I expect they're not going to let anyone get out in front of legal approval any time soon.

>92 proximity1: That's an effort? "I know you are but what am I"? Come on, dude. Pull your socks up. Sure, you shit the bed on that one, that's fine, it's not the end of the world. >93 kiparsky: Even if that settlement was chicken feed to FOX----it's still off the charts for pretty much anything that's happened in the last several decades and I can't think that the top people at FOX aren't a little sick to their stomachs having to swallow that for the whole world to see. It's a shitburger and we all got to watch FOX swallow it whole. To think it didn't matter to FOX seems a bit arrogant and they've got at least one more coming. Prox is so far down this excuse making path with Trump and friends that it seems always he's going to find some lame reason to make it unremarkable but it is remarkable in that there's never been anything that I can think of like it.

And all for Trump's unfounded election lies that FOX among other conservative/right wing big shots and entities were afraid to call him out on and/or maybe believed somehow those lies might keep them in the power positions they were in during his presidency. They would actually have had to carry off a coup to do it. As per Jan. 6, 2021 no one can say they didn't try to do just that.

The 1/6 aftermath ~

When Trump and the FAUX News personnel saw people continue to sport MAGA hats, t-shirts and waving MAGA flags dollar signs were dancing in their heads. Trump saw donors and future voters. The Foxites saw an increase in viewers and ad dollars raining down from the sky. This was the modern-day version of an ageless story.

Now, Trump still sees donors and future voters. And he also hopes to enjoy a getting-out-of-jail-free card. The Foxites feel torrents of rain beating down on them.

>92 proximity1: Every film project is a gamble.

And the point was that not one of them has come close to costing $750 million; John Carter seems to have lost Disney on the order of 200 million dollars.

Companies settle out of court every day of the week

And they choose to fight cases like this every day of the week, because inviting everyone to sue you because they know you'll pay them to go away is bad practice. Fox has got at least one more libel trial coming; are they going to pay another $750 million?

$750 million is not pocket change, even for a huge corporation. I'm skeptical that Fox would have had to pay that much; I believe even in a complete loss for Fox, the courts would have been loath to fine them that much. So the problem is all the stuff that would have come out in the trial, as much as anything they would have lost in the trial.

Go stay in your fantasy world. Leave real life to others whose reasoning isn't a fucking joke.

Why do you post here? It doesn't seem to be to discuss things with other people civilly. If you want to convince anyone of anything, you've got up your game, because lines like that don't convince anyone you're making a good argument.

When Carlson signed a new contract with Fox in 2021, he expanded his presence on Fox Nation with documentaries and a flagship show — Tucker Carlson Today — airing three times per week. That is, until he was ousted from the network last week.

Read the Text Message from Tucker Carlson That ‘Set Off a Panic’ at Fox News: ‘It’s Not How White Men Fight’

Message sent to one of his producers ~

A couple of weeks ago, I was watching video of people fighting on the street in Washington. A group of Trump guys surrounded an Antifa kid and started pounding the living shit out of him. It was three against one, at least. Jumping a guy like that is dishonorable obviously. It’s not how white men fight. Yet suddenly I found myself rooting for the mob against the man, hoping they’d hit him harder, kill him. I really wanted them to hurt the kid. I could taste it. Then somewhere deep in my brain, an alarm went off: this isn’t good for me. I’m becoming something I don’t want to be. The Antifa creep is a human being. Much as I despise what he says and does, much as I’m sure I’d hate him personally if I knew him, I shouldn’t gloat over his suffering. I should be bothered by it. I should remember that somewhere somebody probably loves this kid, and would be crushed if he was killed. If I don’t care about those things, if I reduce people to their politics, how am I better than he is?

It would seem to me that text sent a day after the Capitol attack is a conflicted Tucker not knowing where to stand as public revulsion towards the Capitol rioters was at its peak. His heart as it turns out was with the attackers who swarmed and ganged up on the Capitol and DC police and over the coming months he would downplay the violence of that day to the point where it was all benign and he would take his audience to that same place.

In a follow-up to >87 proximity1: and, especially, the reaction which would have us overlook the fact that, in the big-bucks world of mass-media entertainment, 788m USD is, though a huge fortune to readers here, simply not world-shaking in the circles in which Rupert Murdoch and other multi-billionaires move.

From this, as a start, I move on to mention to those here who have regarded and commented on (see above) the FOX / News Corp. International court settlement with Toronto's Dominion Voter Systems as an astounding sum (approx. 787.5m USD), to reflect on the fact that it is now reported that New York and California lost over $90 billion* in income to low-tax states during Covid. How? If we are to believe the reports, it's largely due to wealthy people finally becoming fed up and electing to quit these states in favor of a few other alternative places to live.

My guess is that the same voices here who crowed with glee over the whopping size of the FOX News pay-out in an out-of-court settlement with Toronto's Dominion Voter Systems shall turn themselves into pretzels trying to shrug off the revenue losses from the wealth-flight which has gone on in New York state and California since the onset of the Covid pandemic.

So, combined, New York and California are the population of Italy, 25th in world, and a GDP higher than Japan, 3rd in the world. And they should worry about things that don't matter to Rupert Murdoch.

Which sounds to me like a call for revolution, lest the nation states that are at least nominally by the people cede all power to the self interested Murdochs of the world.

Ex-Foxer Abby Grossberg Reveals Tucker Carlson’s Stunning Plan To Make McCarthy Grovel on Live Hunger Games-Style Show

Fired Fox News producer Abby Grossberg revealed that fired Fox News host Tucker Carlson planned to have Kevin McCarthy “grovel” for the speakership and extract concessions from him in a live Hunger Games-style spectacle during the vote for speaker of the House.

Carlson was extremely vocal about his attempts to influence the outcome of McCarthy’s chaotic bid for the speaker’s gavel and very publicly got what he was trying to extract from McCarthy in order to attain the speakership.

But on Tuesday night’s edition of CNN’s Anderson Cooper 360, Grossberg — a former producer and booker who is suing Fox News over her termination — revealed to host Anderson Cooper the stunning plan to have McCarthy beg for his political life as Carlson’s viewers watched.

Now this...

Here's an extended commentary from Glenn Greenwald in his anchor-role for his regular week-nightly podcast "System Update" on the platform Rumble :

In it, Greenwald goes to great pains to explain how FOX News execs. and, by extension, News Corp. International, the parent group, hold its own viewers, be they fans of Carlson --and, until recently, some 30m of then were-- or not, in contempt as a bunch of irredeemably stupid and gullible rubes who'll swallow uncritically just anything the network throws their way. Alas, Carlson's main, core, fan-base aren't rightly described as such. They're, if anything, among the more typically given to critical thought in the sorry spectrum of the American public.

Reviewed carefully, as Greenwald does here, the back-story given of how FOX was supposedly obliged to dismiss Carlson for what, in its own calculated effort to slander, libel and defame Carlson, the scenario related to Carlson was only revealed by comments which could have had no other source than key actors in the FOX executive boardroom, shows the level of depravity at the FOX corporate hierarchy. In short, what Greenwald puts on view is FOX's after-the-fact effort to produce a character-assassinating frame-up, "stitch-up" of Tucker Carlson--and, Greenwald proposes some plausible reasons, motives, for this hatchet-job from FOX.

The Greenwald report also serves as something of a litmus test. Those who don't and can't follow his portrayal of events, shall, by effectively failing the litmus test, also miss that it's very likely that they're the sort of politically simple-minded people, whatever their political stripe, on whom FOX News--Tucker Carlson apart--count heavily.

Tucker Carlson says he will interview Putin about Ukraine

US political commentator and former Fox News host Tucker Carlson says he has been granted an interview with Russian President Vladimir Putin...

One Russian missile may have landed in Poland...(?)

Volodymyr Zelenskyy / Володимир Зеленський @ZelenskyyUa | 3:26 AM · Feb 7, 2024

Another massive Russian air attack against our country. Six regions came under enemy fire. All of our services are currently working to eliminate the consequences of this terror.

In Mykolaiv, dozens of houses were destroyed and one person was killed. More than ten people were injured in Kyiv, and two have been reported dead as of now. There may be people underneath the rubble. Some communications, including high-voltage cables, were damaged in the capital. Work is currently underway to repair everything as soon as possible.

Two people were injured in Kharkiv, and one was rescued. Rescuers are currently on the scene in the Lviv region.

My condolences to all who have lost loved ones. We will definitely retaliate against Russia; terrorists will always face the consequences of their actions.

I am grateful to all of our medics, rescuers, and utility workers. I thank everyone who cares about our country and saves and assists people.
