Stars aren't showing at all when I look at my review page. They show in my library and on work pages, but in the reviews on work pages they're grey.

I think it isn't a bug but a design change. There's been a bunch of changes on the site and in the LT app the past few days. A "GenreThing" box is showing up now, too.
My guess is this is all a part of LT 2.0 for the work pages.

Me, too.

If the grey is a design choice I can't say it's one I support. It doesn't stand out enough from the text.

Just noting here that I've seen this and have asked developers about it. We'll update this thread with any updates.

conceptDawg has let me know that the stars, although not supposed to go out quite yet, are a part of LT2 and not a bug. There are a lot of irons in the fire, and there will be a larger release happening soon for the Reviews page, so please hold tight until then before further comments. Thanks for your patience!

Just noting the thumbs also transitioned at (for me) the same time as stars, and similarly "partially": the primary review retains the green stars and left-pointing thumb, while the list of reviews by other LTers (below the primary review) displays the grey stars and right-pointing thumb.
(I note this for myself, to track the changes. Not seeking clarification or updates as per >9 kristilabrie: )

Ah; I thought it was a design change.
So, for me, all stars are grey and all thumbs are now blue.
However, when I looked at my review for Hench, I was surprised to see only half a star because I liked the book. And, actually, it still has the 4.5 stars I gave it but they cross a line break, so I see it as 4 stars at the end of one line and half a star at the beginning of the next.

The line break also happens in your library (your books tab) , which is (also) very annoying.

Yep. Lots of files went out over the last couple of days. I'm just (slowly) going through and fixing small bugs that might have escaped notice before.
The stars aren't going back to the yellow/green pixelated images though. They'll be the cleaner stars going forward. The grey IS a display bug.

I just submitted a review, and I'm noticing that my review in the "all member reviews" section on the book's review page is showing up with five gray stars, even though I actually rated it four stars (and that is showing up correctly at the top of the page). Not sure if that's a known part of whatever display issue is going on, but I thought I'd mention it in case it's a new wrinkle or a different problem.

The Annotated Shakespeare was just reviewed and was given 2 stars by user therebelprince. https://www.librarything.com/work/15236345/reviews/202053758
But then if you look at that user's review of it under the All Members' Reviews field it shows 5 stars.

>11 humouress: I think that the problem is that there is no longer a line break before the stars. So that if the review fills up the line to almost the end, the stars will end up crossing the line break.
If you look at the reviews for Hench, the review after mine by RandyMetcalfe has the middle star as half grey and half white. I suspect they gave it two and a half stars, so the half star works but all the other stars are grey.

The redesigned Reviews page loads slowly and is more challenging to read today. On phones, will we have to scroll to read a review that's more than a few lines from now on?
On topic...
The rating stars are currently black, not gray, on my side. I can see the ratings on Helenliz's reviews. Stars after a half-star are fully black, the same as the stars before the half-rating.

I'm working on getting these things worked out today. Lots of tendrils in the ratings code that I missed when doing an update.
>20 MarthaJeanne: Do you see other icons on the site, like before each little section in the Zeitgeist? Or are there little squares there too?
>22 aspirit: The reviews page now loads MUCH faster than the old page (I've done hundreds of tests. Your page loads in about 1.1 seconds on my phone vs. 5.2 seconds on the old page).
It now loads to fit a mobile device instead of loading very tiny as a full desktop view. How many lines do you see on your phone? I can read a review with about 30-40 lines on my phone easily. This also depends on your font settings on LT, btw. You can change that at the bottom of any of the new pages ("Change Style").

>20 MarthaJeanne: Are you still using the very old version of LibraryThing? (I say "very" old because we're now getting to the newest "LT2" version, the current/what will soon be the "old" version, and the "very old" brown/salmon color version.) Because that will not be expected to be supported for any LT2 updates, unfortunately.

Another bug with stars :
In catalog view, if the average rating column is active, and a book has a rating of 4 or under, the last star(s) that should be empty will be full anyway.

>24 conceptDawg: Well, mine is certainly taking longer than about a second to load. I'll get used to it; I just don't want to wait longer to see less than what I'd expected.
However, the spacing on the Reviews page is already better than it was when I looked this morning. I can again see a full review at a time, even if it's more than a few lines long. Thank you for whatever change occurred. (No, I haven't selected a different style today. Style B is the only that's tolerable for me on my phone.)

The full/empty stars and the half stars should be fixed now. (well, in a minute or so).
As well, the stars in reviews are now all to the left at the bottom of each review to make them easier to scan while browsing.
They Should all be green and grey stars again also.
New feature: if they are editable (one of your ratings) then you'll get red stars to better indicate interaction (I'm still working on getting the logic right for the half-red star).

I haven't been on my site for the past few weeks and had no idea there was a problem with the rating mechanism. I just tried to rate a book 2 stars and the review site insists I rated it 5 stars. And when I try to fix it - and rate it by just using the little square boxes in the rating column in the general "book search"section, it does not allow me to rate it at all. Help!!!!
Now not only can't I rate my book reviews but can't trust the ratings I am reading from other people.

>35 LadyLo: As >36 amanda4242: asked, can you give us the web browser you're using and also your operating system (e.g. Firefox version 78 on Windows 10, etc.)? Also, where are you trying to rate your book/s: both the first attempt and "in the general "book search" section" that you mention? Where exactly are you doing this? I should be able to take a closer look with more specifics, thanks in advance for your help and your patience.
38LadyLo
My computer is a Mac OS - operating system Catalina version 10.15.6. I use Google for a browser. I tried to rate the books in the area where a book review is written - which allows me to click on the correct amount of stars but then when I save the review and browse at it in the general main page it always shows 5 stars regardless of how many stars I actually gave it. Then I tried to edit my book review when I saw the stars were not correct - but it did not correct it. I also went to my list of "all book" where the chart shows stars, and can be changed by editing there - but that did not work either. I can change it - but then when you actually look at the book review it always shows 5 stars. So do other people's reviews. On my computer I see all reviews with 5 stars when I research a book and look at the reviews of that book.
39LadyLo
One more thing, I just checked my list of books catalogued on LibraryThing, and now there are no longer any stars in that category. I just have 5 empty little boxes in the rating section. I tried to rate a book in that manner and nothing happens. I also just tried to re-rate a recent review with 2 stars and it came up as 5 stars. The last 5 or 6 reviews I recently posted I have no longer rated stars - just wrote my rating unless it was a 5 star - then I used the stars because if I try to use any rating at all it comes up 5 stars. As I just said in my last comment, my computer is a MAC OS operating system Catalina version 10.15.6 and I have been using this for almost a year with no problems - although MAC does occasionally do upgrades - I haven't been aware of any upgrades recently.
Thanks for trying to help...

Ok. Thanks for the information.
Now, let's get more detailed because I CAN see items that you've rated with various star ratings, so we're obviously not seeing the same thing.
Give me an example of the book that you're talking about rating 2 stars that is showing as 5 stars.
And you are seeing 5 stars everywhere, for all books that have been rated? By anybody?

>40 conceptDawg: Yes, I am seeing 5 gray stars for all my ratings, and everyone else's too.
The book reviews I tried to rate less than 5 stars I went back in and deleted the stars when I saw they were wrong. The one that I rated 2 Stars just a few days ago was by Henry James, "The Sacred Fount". If you look at my review, you will see I gave up on the stars and just stated I gave it 2 - instead of actually displaying stars.

Ah. So you should be seeing GREEN stars. The grey stars mean that they have no ratings. Ok, that helps me try to figure this out a bit. I'll keep digging.
For what it's worth, I use a Mac and Google Chrome browser too, so I doubt it's specifically that. It could be a problem with some of the data or resources.

>43 conceptDawg: I tried to rate them first from the book page. The correct amount of green stars appeared when I rated it but after I hit the save button the green stars turned to gray and always 5 stars. When that didn't work, I tried from the catalog page. That did absolutely nothing. I have little gray empty boxes where stars should be in the catalog page.
45LadyLo
Progress… now when I go to my profile and view my reviews from there by clicking on “447 reviews” I have the correct amount of green stars back. And I was able to add the stars to the new reviews and they appear fine too.. Thanks so much for fixing that.
Now what about the rest. Am I the only one having problems?
When I view my catalogue of books it still has no ratings at all and just 5 small empty gray boxes for each book.
And when I view any book from the home page search I have gray stars that show all 5 stars no matter how bad the review was - including my own reviews when I do a general book search from the home page. In other words, the only place the stars are correct is if I go to my profile and look at all my reviews from there.
Can the rest be fixed?

It's certainly not widespread. I won't say that it's only you but at this point you are the only one reporting it. I can't reproduce on my end either. Though I certainly believe you.

>15 bragan: Bragan, I don't know if you have been back to the "what's up with stars?" bug page, but I am having the same problem and there seems to be no answer how to correct it. Do you still see gray stars? Are there still 5 stars for every book even if the rating is bad and meant to be less stars?
My stars are fine (green and the correct amount) when I am in my profile viewing my reviews, but if I go to the home page and search any book in my library or on the site in general I only see 5 gray stars.
And in my catalog list of books, in the rating column, I see 5 gray empty boxes - no stars and no rating.

I took conceptDawg's advice - I didn't have Chrome activities on my Mac that I could disable - as far as I know, but I did disable some "log tracking" option that somehow recently got activated in my email - which coincidently used gray stars to indicate new emails coming in.
Thanks for your feedback brogan.
And kristililabrie - I would surely appreciate any other suggestions on how to fix my star problem.

OK, so this is the change that has finally pushed me to move away from the salmon-era design. Was seeing strange behaviour with book ratings, found this thread, saw the suggestion in post 33. Glad it had the link to the page to switch designs as I had completely forgotten how to change it!

_Everything_ in my catalog (i.e.) "Your Books" shows up with "*****" (five stars)
That's just not "right."
NEVER mind: I see that the rating-star system has been made "new and improved"---LOL!!! another needless "improvement" which confuses those who were used to the previous style.
