Is this a new release or as it states "Back in Stock Soon" ... meaning a partial run was seen in previous years?

And ... are there other Dickens titles besides this and David Copperfield that share this same cover treatment?

It's interesting that this one appears to come with a slipcase but the seemingly matching title David Copperfield did not come with an accompanying slip case.

>2 thisGuy33: Right now there are three Dickens editions with the same cover treatment:

1. David Copperfield (no slipcase; limitation 400 with a slight possibility only 200 were printed)
2. Oliver Twist (slipcase; limitation 600 with likely only 200-300 copies printed)
3. Nicholas Nickleby (slipcase; limitation 1200 - wise move so that EP can feed it to its customer base in at least 3-4 prints runs :D)

>3 EPsonNY: Ahhh ... I forgot about Oliver Twist. It's weird that I've never regarded my Oliver Twist to be a 'matching' book series with David Copperfield. I assume it has to do with Twist being so much more of a normal size book and it has a slipcase. Whereas Copperfield is just a monster of a book (thickness) and has no slipcase.

Now with this Nickleby ... it is a hybrid of the two ... Copperfield thickness ... Twist slipcase.

This might end up being one of the first series of books where I do as some others do ... and remove the slipcase permanently (so they don't look weird/inconsistent next to each other on the shelf).

I usually like slipcases ... but don't know how I'll feel seeing these three different (but similar) looks next to each other.

In fact as it is (and I never thought about this) ... I keep my Copperfield and Twist in two separate places in my book shelves (interesting subconscious decision).

>4 thisGuy33: Monster of a book; completely agree! It deserves a slipcase with a text block support. Too bad that EP sticks with green leather only instead of perhaps borrowing from Nonesuch Dickens and adding a pop of color with brown, yellow, red or blue leather...

>6 thisGuy33: I assume this new Nickleby to be a similar "monster ... it's size is listed as ...

5 1/2” x 7 7/8”, 1,175pp

while Copperfield was listed as

5 1/2” x 8 3/4”, 908pp

Not sure I like that they chose to make Nickleby smaller in height by almost an inch.

And to your color scheme thoughts ... I actually really love the 'green' look especially with the 3/4 leather treatment. But I wouldn't overly object your suggestion of a 'pop' of color on other titles that might have a similar look (however I like keeping these looking similar as a series).

I hope EP releases more Dickens titles in this style ... ever since I have picked up a copy of Copperfield ... it has been one of my favorite 'looks' on my shelf ... just so very classy.

>6 thisGuy33: I understand the obvious savings to EP; however, it is quite cumbersome to handle these behemoths. It takes a while to just relax the spine of such monstrous text block by alternating between opening a few pages from the front and back :D... Then of course there is the increased risk of damaging the page block gilt...

I personally prefer my two volume EP copies of Monte Cristo, Les Miserables, Gone with the Wind, Fountainhead or Doctor Zhivago.

EP's choice of green is tasteful, but making the book smaller is an odd choice that may perhaps have something to do with the logistics of binding this fatso of a book...

These are reproductions of the first editions, so I presume the page size is predetermined. Probably the colors, too.

>8 jroger1: These are reproductions of the serialized pamphlets, so the size and color of pages may be predetermined, but perhaps not the color of leather.

One wonders whether EP will choose to redo The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club, which were published as individual booklets housed in a leather case (link to example below):

>9 EPsonNY:
I have that set of booklets and rather like the format, but I guess most customers prefer them bound together. Perhaps it would be too easy for the dog to eat a single booklet.

>8 jroger1: Yeah I remember someone (maybe you) schooling me on the fact that these 'reproductions' share the same size/format as the original late 1800's/early 1900's originals.

So I accept the sizes for what they are. But I do wish they were just a little bigger for comfort factor.

>7 EPsonNY: and I too love the larger two volume sets of Monte Cristo, Tale of two Cities, Great Expectations, Three Musketeers. But for this different format (out of the three 'similar' here) ... I like the Copperfield the best.

>9 EPsonNY: >10 jroger1: ... I really like the way Pickwick is unique in its ways. It stands out on my shelf nicely. And I enjoy reading the individual pamphlets ... it's a nice change of pace.

That said ... I would still buy a new Pickwick in this 3/4 leather bound as well. Titles I truly love and often re-read ... are ones I love having multiple artistically beautiful versions! Here's to wishful thinking!

Does anyone know if this is the first printing run of this version of Nickleby? Or have I missed the fact that this is a second run?

>17 Bob_Reader: at $1200 for these two EP DLE novels you would be better off simply buying the 21 volume Franklin library Oxford edition of the complete Dickens which faithfully ports over the original publication and illustrations. My brother got this set and it is gorgeous.

>19 Bob_Reader: for $2575 you can get a near mint copy. My brother got it for $2200, perhaps with an email you can lower this price. I bought some of these editions and they are gorgeous. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Franklin-Library-OXFORD-COMPLETE-WORKS-OF-CHARLES-DICKE...

>19 Bob_Reader: As for OT being sold out? I would say ya gotta believe what they say 'for now' ... who knows ... it could change ... I'd like to assume they wouldn't lie ... but then again sometimes they tell me they don't have access to the numbers so they don't completely know.

As for buying on the second hand market ... ya just have to be patient. There are currently 4 listings on ebay for copperfield. The lowest listed price is $575 with best offer.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/383863700721?hash=item59600f3cf1:g:0Q0AAOSwEK5f2-QQ

The last one sold for less then $450 (they accepted best offer ... so probably sold for around $400ish.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/324511389472?hash=item4b8e62d720%3Ag%3Anf8AAOSw5uNfpwPi...

So I'm sure you could offer the 4 current listings around $400 as well ... and one would probably come back with $450 ... which is a fair price (since the original price was $340).

I think I searched a while for mine on ebay cuz at the time there were no listings and one would pop up once in a while for $700/$800. Finally two or three came up from between $600/$800 ... I offered something like $400 and someone accepted $500.

For me ... some titles are worth paying double the original price and EP's Copperfield is one I would pay double ($700) for without blinking.

As for OT ... There is only one listing on ebay currently for $600 or best offer. There are no 'recently sold' listed so these don't seem to have been popping up lately for sale on ebay. I would offer $400 for this as well and see what they say. As this originally sold for $296 ... paying an extra $100 or $150 would be fair.

The other options are ...

1 ... be patient for a few months ... more listings always pop up.

2 ... check abebooks and amazon (again be patient).

3 ... ask around here if anyone has a copy for trade.

And my final bit of advice ... as I am probably one of the biggest Dickens fans ... I have multiple copies of most of Dickens titles (mostly EP and FS ... but also some old original prints as well as some random publishers) ... one of my favorite versions (non-leather) is ...

https://picclick.co.uk/Collection-of-10-volumes-Folio-Society-Charles-Dickens-19...

It has lovely illustrations heavily throughout and I love the graphic spine treatment when sitting on my shelves. And the red stripe across the top makes the books look more sophisticated then regular cloth titles.

There is currently one on ebay ...

https://www.ebay.com/itm/274723770262?hash=item3ff6d00f96:g:yEcAAOSw9zVgUmdy

But when I was looking a few years ago ... there were several sets popping up often.

I paid a little less then $200 for my 7 book set (that's about $29 a book ... very reasonable).

Hope this long ranting post helped a little.

>22 Bob_Reader: yeah ... this is where the patience comes in. Keep track of who this current lister is ... and if he still hasn't sold it in a few months make another offer again.

Just send them a direct message and tell them ... 'if you're ever are willing to let it go for (whatever amount you are willing to pay) ... please contact me'

And sometimes after a few weeks of the book sitting ... they'll decide to accept your offer.
