Just checking in. I’m thinking of continuing my sojourn in the Dragonhaven at Smokehill National Park.

I'm in two different versions of parallel Earth; as well as Smokehill I'm in an alternative 1983 England, looking for The Left-handed Booksellers of London.

Currently reading Master of Sorrows.

I picked this up on the strength of a brief snippet heard on an Audible preview that sounded intriguing, but at about 20% in, it's not really my cup of tea. A little too much a blow-by-blow of following ye olde standard "cleverer-than-thou teenage boy with a destiny" through his daily school routine and too much "As You Know, Bob" worldbuilding going on in the dialogue.

Sticking with it because it's my first Fantasy Bingo read for the year and it's proving to be a fairly quick read, but so far, I'm not really feeling it.

More sci-fi again, but just leaving the Indranan planetary empire where I found out what things were like After the Crown.

Ready for the publication of the last book today, I'm in the world of the Deathless in Peter Newman's The Deathless.

I am still dragging on King of Shadows. Meanwhile I finished up my time in Sealey Head, which I thought was well-constructed but unremarkable. Can anyone recommend their favorite McKillip? I think the only one of hers that I ever strongly connected with was The Forgotten Beasts of Eld, and I feel that I'm missing something about what makes her work so widely praised.

>15 Kanarthi: I enjoyed her Riddlemaster of Hed series and more recently, Winter Rose and The Book of Atrix Wolfe. Her books are always very dream-like to me and can feel a little slow if you're not in the mood for something in that vibe. I have Alphabet of Thorn on the docket to read this year.

Having a weekend in the country at a secluded country estate in The 7 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle. (Or my version gives her 7 1/2 deaths, but I had to leave it at 7 to get the right touchstone. :) )

Finished Under Heaven, by Guy Gavriel Kay. It's more historical fiction than fantasy, as the magic is feather light. I liked it. It meanders a bit, although I think that was the author's intent. He wraps it up nicely in the end, with a chapter-length Epilogue doing some heavy duty thread-tying.

Like Niko, I just started the "7-1/2 Deaths." I'm a sucker for time travel!

DNFing The queen of sorrow. I like Daleina but Naelin drives me nuts and this volume spends more time with her than I can stand.

So I've moved to upstate NY to discover The truth about unicorns.

I'm in Lud-in-the-Mist's Dorimare, and enjoying the author's use of language quite a lot. I've looked up at least three different unfamiliar plants so far, and all of the botanical mentions give the novel a springlike air.

>16 curioussquared:, >17 humouress: Okay, cool, I remember enjoying Riddlemaster when I was a teenager, but I have no desire to reread it. Maybe Winter Rose is a good one to try next. I have some vague memory of perhaps reading it, but I remember nothing about the contents. (Probably I wouldn't have picked it up at all if not for the stunning covers that all the copies in the library had.)

I'm just leaving the Havakeen Empire (a neighbouring country to Shkoder) where we discovered The Fifth Quarter. Hmm ... okay. Huff comes up with some ... interesting relationships.

I'm in turn-of-the-century New York with The Golem and the Jinni.

Also started listening to Nice Dragons Finish Last on audio. I don't spend as much time in the car these days, so that is likely to be quite a long time from beginning to end, if I don't make other accommodations to listen to it outside of drive time.

>22 humouress: The Fifth Quarter and No Quarter were my trashy catnip. If you're going to do bodily possession, you might as well get really twisted. I'm not even sure if I'm interested in continuing on with The Quartered Sea, because I was mostly invested in Vree's story (even if the denouement disappointed me).

Just finished The Dreamblood Duology by N.K. Jemisin -- omnibus of the two books. Good stuff, of course. I did have a hint of feeling, from halfway on, that it could've edited down some -- the omnibus is a doorstop -- but I feel that about many long works these days, whatever the genre or quality. Her worldbuilding, characterizations, imagery, & concepts are always good.
