Is there a specific place to post questions about the availability of the Comlepete Works of a specific author, and not just from one publisher?

Book Talk probably: https://www.librarything.com/ngroups/593/Book-talk plus a genre group (so Fantasy Fans for fantasy authors for example).

Now - for older authors, it may be worth asking here or in the Fine Editions group or in Easton Press or in the George Macy devotees group (whichever had published at least some of it) - just because participants there tend to have somewhat large libraries AND know their books - so they may have info.

My question certainly falls under this category. I know we have a lot of U.K. members here and I am curious if anyone has a recommendation for an American who wants to live and work there. I lived in the U.K. from 2014-17 while in the military, loved it, and now I would like to return for good. I don't want too go to deep on this as it is extremely off topic but if you have any ideas please message me.

Hi, it really depends on what you are after, with regards to where you want to live.
With your being former military, then a job for an Engineering company could work well. A lot of Aerospace and Defence companies employ people from the armed services. Interestingly I have never met a Former US military person working in the UK for a defence company.

>5 Hamwick: Thank you for your reply. That is definitely a possibility for me. My Anglophilia will likely have working a job well beneath my qualifications but if I can find a way to get back there I don't mind.

You might want to take a look at https://www.thalesgroup.com/en/career - Thales is the pre-eminent European defense contractor but has a finger in many other pies. I know them as the premier manufacturer of military and civil aircraft simulators - but they do lots more both civil and military.

>4 L.Bloom: my tip would be to look at rightmove.co.uk to get a sense of housing costs; they vary dramatically across the country.

Also, be sure to look up the immigration costs. Besides the visa, I think there's a healthcare surcharge and perhaps some other charges that would be incurred. These can add up, so it pays to have the money ready to go in your account before moving.

Always happy to try to answer any more specific questions if I can.

Best of luck!

Have you checked out whether you can move to the UK in the first place? If the US military posted you to the UK then they will have seen to your visa position and possibly much else to help you feel at home. Starting a new life in a new country without a sponsoring employer seems to me an uncertain and complex decision.

The UK is comprised of four major constitutional units which are in order of increasing size, opportunity and importance: Northern Ireland, Wales, Scotland and England. What would be the best fit for your lifestyle and job requirements?

UbiquitousUK makes a very good point on house prices, it does vary. Not as much as the US though (unless you want to live in or near London, in which case think New York prices). I am doing the move the opposite way, UK to the US, the property prices in Los Angeles had my eyes watering!

Other engineering firms, that you could probably consider which have a number of locations around the UK (other than Thales mentioned by Appaloosaman) are: BAE Systems, Ultra Electronics, Rolls Royce, Cobham (although I think they are struggling a little at the moment), Moog, Eaton and Airbus (either their commercial division or Defence and Space division). There is also Boeing and Lockheed in the UK, smaller divisions though than the large US behemoths. There is GE as well, I am not so familiar with them though.

I know people who have worked at all of them (other than GE), as well as having worked at a couple myself (Engineering is a small world), so I know that salary wise, generally Airbus pays higher than the others for a like for like position (in some cases a lot higher). Of course it is not all about the money, but it does help!

I have no idea what you need for a work visa if coming to the UK as a foreign National, or if you even need one.

I wish you the best of luck in finding what you are looking for and a nice place to live!

You can read about work visas on the UK government website. Here's the link.

I love this group! Thank you for the all for the great advice. It looks like this will be a medium term goal with a 2-5 year horizon.
