Found: Fantasy book series in magic world where hero goes on adventure with female and falls in love

Trying to remember a book series i read about 10 years ago, if not more. Can not remember anything about the name or author - although for some reason keep on thinking the name begins with an S. The first book had the picture of a female with the back to the cover, facing a waterfall. The hero in the novels travels with her, and they are escaping some evil. A scene i explicitly remember is them staying with a tribe/group and he is offered the hand in marriage to the chief's niece. That night he decides not to as he admits his feelings to his companion, whose name started with a K? I know this is not much to go on but it has been ages since I read those books. Also one of the other book covers had to do with a desert or sand dunes. Hope anyone can remember it. Also, they get married at some point. IN one of the later books.
