Off topic but people on this board are far smarter than me and have likely come across this problem. I have a room with built in bookcases and was thinking about expanding with either built in shelving or bookcases on the other side. The problem being is that on the side currently free has baseboard heating. What have other people done here to add bookshelves with heating vents that around 14cm in height? I just want to make sure the heat won't cause any damage to the books.
Another question: for the built in bookcases is it difficult to expand the depth and possibly add glass doors? We have a Newfoundland who is a lovely pup but boy does he drool. It's only a matter of time until he comes in the room, shakes his head and slobber will be on half of my books. The door is always closed but I feel it coming...

Many cabinet makers (even using semi-custom cabinet shops) use designs that are made to accept doors or not. So it's likely your existing cabinets would accommodate them. If they were a home project by the previous owner (or you), maybe not.

You *probably* won't have to worry about book damage from the heating since there will presumably be a shelf over top. If you want to be extra careful, you could run a bit of foam or some other insulating material under the shelf. It won't be seen there.

Thanks so much for the messages and help! I'm at the point now where I either need an addition or need to get rid of some books; some extra storage will be nice!
