Additional copies of certain out-of-stock titles added to website

In case anyone has missed out on any titles that have recently gone out of stock, it might be worth checking FS's "last chance to buy" page (https://www.foliosociety.com/uk/miscellaneous/last-chance-to-buy) - a few previously out-of-stock titles have reappeared with low stock. I managed to grab a copy of War of the Worlds, but that has now sold out again.

I'm assuming someone has been tidying up the warehouse. FS also appears to have given the "Last chance to buy" page a spring clean, removing a load of titles that sold out months ago.

These might be returns, so be sure to check your copy for defects.

>2 jroger1: That's a good point, but based on the quantities available, at least for those titles that haven't sold out again yet (new copies available in the dozens), it seems likely that a few extra cases of new books were located when they were doing inventory or something.

Bah, I checked the list and say that the Captain Cook set is low! I want the set but unsure if it’s worth the price. Surprised by how little commentary there is on it in the FSD history. It looks so beautiful.

Interesting sentiment. With most other companies, I would agree without hesitation but in Folio's case, there might not be all that much to worry about. Given that they issue replacement books for even the most subtle of defects, without ever requesting the defective copy in return, it suggests that any returns that people might make, while Folio could resell, are done solely for obtaining refunds. Sure, the original purchaser could do a shoddy job of packing the returning book but that's a much different statistical risk than if Folio accepted back all of the defective books they make good on with replacement copies. It is a little fishy to see out of stock items unexpectedly reappear back in stock, though, so it would still be a good idea to give them a good once-over when you buy them.

This also has me wondering - who is actually making returns? Based on shipping costs alone, I can only guess that the bulk of these people would have to live in the UK.

>6 treereader: This might be a rare occurrence for Folio, but this type of stuff happens all the time in the publishing and collectibles world. Sometimes you'll see a quantity of years-past out of print books appear on a publisher's or large retailer's website with the declaration "Warehouse Find!" Usually, it's a case or two of books that were shoved in some corner somewhere and were forgotten about. I saw this, literally, just yesterday with a large art book dealer I patronize.

I ordered last month after seeing it was low; figured it wouldn’t make it to a summer sale. It has come now and it is definitely beautiful. I haven’t read more than the first 5-6 entries yet but I did page through it a bit. The cloth bindings are slightly rough to the touch but I feel like that may have been an intentional choice. Each volume is blocked with a different design, all of course nautically themed. Each of the three books has three sections of illustrations, mostly paintings, approx 12 pages per volume. The final volume has a nice glossary at the end as well as an index of persons. And the fold-out map is bound in the same cloth as the books. Overall, I’m glad I purchased it since I think it will probably not sell below retail on the secondary market.

I took a quick look at the sales spreadsheet and all of these books are books that sold out in 2020. So I think the odds are good that they were misplaced and turned up in an inventory review (probably run after the sale concluded). But it certainly makes sense to inspect them carefully.

Considering the whole mess with shipping in 2020, there is a chance that some of those are books that were returned by the shipping partners/companies as well after sitting for a few months in a warehouse somewhere and still in their original Folio packaging...

I didn't realize In Parentheses was still in stock; for some reason I thought it was an older publication.

The 2018 3-volume edition is certainly pleasant to handle and read. I've put together a few random comparisons with 1997 single-volume Folio edition:

The 2018 books use Abbey Wove paper for the text with glossy paper for the illustrations. Height and width are smaller than the 1997 single-volume FS edition in the Explorers and Travel series. The individual volumes of the current edition make reading easier as the obviously don't weigh as much as one big volume. In fact the 1997 edition weighs almost as much as the three new volumes put together (1.4:1.8 Kg). The Abbey Wove paper is about one and a half times thicker than the Ibis Cream Wove in 1997, and the latter, as it's name suggests, is decidely cream when compared to the off-white of the 2018 books.

Preliminaries such as the Contents are consciously more classic in 1997, with printers' decorations framing "Contents" and "List of Illustrations" - the new one has a more contemporary feel in this area.

The cloth binding of 2018 is printed with an attractive design as depicted on the website. I like the large 18th-century map, which is stylishly mounted in a similar cloth binding (but without decoration except for a title). However, the stiff paper is tightly folded and so hard to unfold. This gives the feeling that, just possibly, it may eventually split in the corners of the folds. Careful handling should minimise this risk. The older edition, in keeping with others in the Exploration series, has a printed design in black and gold on the binding against a dark blue ground.

The text of 1997 was selected and introduced by Glyndwr Williams. The selection, he says, amounts to "about one-fifth of the original texts . . . while provid{ing} a continuous narrative for each voyage." Omissions are generally not indicated in the text, although there are a few editorial linking passages which obviously indicate some of them. Philip Edwards, editor of the 2018 edition (which is reprinted from the 2003 Penguin edition - ultimately derived from the Hakluyt Society edition, 1955-67), has aimed "to preserve the wholeness of Cook's daily entries . . . rather than present a disconnected string of the more exciting moments. When a day's entry is abbreviated, the omission is noted with three dots (...). More substantial omissions are marked by a row of asterisks." The 2018 3-volume text has been reduced to "about one-third" of the original.

>12 boldface: Thanks for the comparison. Very useful information; good to know how much has been cut and I do like it when omissions are marked.

>12 boldface: thanks for the info! I definitely think the 2018 one is for me...but already have a lot of books I want. Though I will most likely buy it since I have been shamefully known to pay way more for a book after it goes out of print!

>1 CLWggg: Thank you for the heads up!

I got the Winter, Spring, and Summer Anthologies during the Sale, but the Autumn one had sold out. It's difficult to find online at the moment - the ones I have seen have been vastly overpriced (I've seen one advertised for £180!), so was delighted to see it available. Made a new account to take advantage of a £10-off-first-order promo code too, so was able to snatch it for £14.95 :D
