Oh good, I started this today. In chapter one, anyone know for sure what the reference is to "Economic friction in the Orient" is? With my sad little googling skills, I learned about the 1935 Government Act of India which would seem to apply, though for some reason I don't think of India when I think of Orient.

I don't know whether it is the lack of time for reading leisurely and contemplating, or whether I just got into the story and forgot, but I have no notes other than the above post!

In the last chapter, I was thinking that Archie's raise of $15 a week was a hefty one. Then I started doing the math and thinking about his hours, 7 days a week, and it doesn't really seem like much. I don't know what he was making originally, but I'm not sure that raise was even a dollar an hour more.

Anyway, I finished this, hope someone else has more to say than I do about it!

I thought the western backstory was somewhat reminiscent of what Conan Doyle does in Sign of Four and Valley of Fear.

Much better paced than League of Frightened Men, which dragged in places and had too many more or less indistinguishable characters in the League. Good characters here and toward the end in really became exciting - at least I got excited.

>4 Crypto-Willobie: I think this is the story I was confabulating with the Sherlock tales. I pretty much remembered who the villain was and so caught many of the clues that were tossed to the reader.

I want to try the experiment with the rubber band, but haven't got one of the right size

I wouldn't mind a re-read of something. Looks like I already missed out on this one.

>6 etrainer:
We seem to be (re)reading various Wolfes (Wolves?) at a varying pace. Post your thought on whichever ones whenever.
