What did YOU buy today? January 2021

I hit the Dollar Tree and found Night Train: New and Selected Stories, The Trip to Echo Spring, Paris by the Book, Revolution for Dummies, Wild Beauty and The Dinner List.

I went a bit crazy, cleaning out my holds so I can -- I hope -- be more frugal this year. On the plus side, the books I paid for were all from 40-75% off list price. Two of them cost less than $2, one less than $4.

I bought:
* Lawless and the Flowers of Sin by William Sutton (historical mystery)
* The Unwinding: An Inner History of the New America by George Packer
* Hoax: Donald Trump, Fox News, and the Dangerous Distortion of Truth by Brian Stelter
* The Zealot and the Emancipator: John Brown, Abraham Lincoln, and the Struggle for American Freedom by H.W. Brands
* The Daring Duke by Jess Michaels (historical romance)

And one ARC:
* Faye, Faraway by Helen Fisher (pub 1/21; contemporary fantasy -- woman meets her past self)

My probable next purchase: Un-Trumping America: A Plan to Make America a Democracy Again by Dan Pfeiffer. (Yay, Georgia!!!!)

I went to a FOTL sale and got 740 Park for $2. Pondered The Bastard of Istanbul but put it back. When I went back for it it was gone.

p.s. -- Saw "Trump's American Carnage" on Frontline on PBS last night -- worth watching. Senate should be required to watch it before the impeachment vote. Not expecting justice to come out of it: Hamilton warned in Federalist Papers of likelihood that party would prevail over questions of guilt or innocence. And, honestly, some of the GOP could be found guilty of what Trump did and is accused of. Jurors who drive drunk, for example, aren't often willing to find drunk drivers guilty.
p.p.s. -- One party in Wisconsin state government is -- again -- trying to overturn the mask mandate in the middle of a pandemic. They're choosing politics over the economy and public health. Dem & GOP voters are pretty even, but the GOP redrew maps to make Dem votes not count, and John Roberts's Supreme Court has said they don't care about that kind of disenfranchisement. * The Rose Code by Kate Quinn (pub 3/21; historical fiction set just post-WWII; enjoyed The Alice Network and I have The Huntress on the pile)
* Band of Sisters by Lauren Willig (pub 3/21; historical fiction set in WWI)

Apparently I have a problem. Between the free place and Dollar Tree I spent $2 and got Arab Jazz, No one Can Pronounce my Name, Born to be Posthumous, And Soon I Heard a Roaring Wind and The Writer Abroad: Austria to Uzbekistan . All of them were hardbacks.

Well, there are several of us, then. I spent more money. The first was for my historical fiction book group. There are no excuses for the rest.

I bought:
* Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller
* The Rakess by Scarlett Peckham (historical romance; I missed getting the ARC when my bookstore shut down last year; book is on top romances of 2020 list)
* Growing Up in the 1850s: The Journal of Agnes Lee (autobiography/memoir)
* The Bravest Voices: A Memoir of Two Sisters' Heroism During the Nazi Era by Ida Cook (aka Safe Passage)

I put a book on hold until I could check out reviews: The Good Ancestor by Roman Krznaric.

And I ordered a copy of Deadly Hours by Harris/Huber/Kearsley/Trent. I found it when I was checking for a new Susanna Kearsley. And I preordered the next C.S. Harris book in the Sebastian St. Cyr series, What the Devil Knows.

I've got to get my book spending on a budget.
