The Letter.

Tom Hollander, his sister Julia and father Toni tell the story of a letter from the BBC which saves their family and spawns a rich legacy of Czech music in the UK. In March 1939 broadcaster Hans Hollander, grandfather of writer and musician Julia and actor Tom, receives a letter that is his family's passport to freedom. K A Wright from the BBC Programme Division writes inviting Hans (who has been Head of the equivalent of the Third Programme in Czechoslovakia) to come to London to discuss 'Janacek and the whole of question of Czech music generally'. The letter asks 'How soon do you think you could come, and how long would you be able to stay?' After years of trying to fall in with the anti-Semitic bureaucracy, the Hollanders are fearful for the future; the letter offers them a way out of the simmering violence. On March 15 1939 - the day Hitler's tanks rolled into Prague - they take the train from Brno, the last one west for many months, constantly in terror at stations where people they know are taken off the train by the Gestapo. The letter guarantees them safe passage to Britain and once there Hans and Kenneth Wright share their passion for Czech music. Kenneth is a talented composer and Hans inspires him to orchestrate Bohemian folk songs. The Hollanders go in search of K A Wright and discover an outsider at the BBC who saved their family through his artistic curiosity and passionate belief in the international language of music. Julia seeks out and revives the music Kenneth and Hans made together and Tom reads from his grandfather's letters. Janacek's 'In The Mists' is performed by Julia Hollander, KA Wright's 'Nocturne' is played by Peter McMullin, and 'Bohemia' is sung by Julia Hollander with accompaniment by Peter McMullin who researched KA Wright's music. Hans Hollander's letters are translated by Anne Varty and read by Tom Hollander. Between The Ears: The Letter is produced by Dixi Stewart with assistance and guidance from Mark Burman and Hannah Dean.
