Combining authors

These both refer to Frédéric Schulz, but I can't seem to combine them.

>1 MarthaJeanne: The second one is not a legit author page for me. No name at the top. How did you find it? It looks like those pages (tag, author etc) that get automatically generated when you type a web address, even though they don't really exist

It is the page I get if I click on my author of the book. This is a book with multiple authors and so far only two members have entered it. Our sources chose different main authors AND they encoded é differently.

I have no idea why it doesn't show properly then, with the author name at the top. The search fails to find either one. Looks like a bug, whether because of encoding or something else.

Done.
I separated MarthaJeanne's book from the others, and was then able to get a proper name on the author page. They still wouldn't show up in search, though, so I had to use an old URL trick to combine them. I then re-combined the books.

It probably would have worked to just wait after separating the works, until the authors showed up in search.

Thank you.

Do you want to post that trick here?

I used to use it all the time, and wanted to use it here, but completely forgot what it was!

I'm reluctant to post it publicly.

I am also reluctant to have such things available publicly. I personally don't want it for myself. However, we both know lilithcat from talk. I suggest that you post it to her in a private profile message.

I'm not looking to know for myself either, but am just curious; what about it makes you reluctant to have it public? Is it something that could be abused or requires a lot of knowledge/skill to not mess stuff up in the process?

It's a direct way to combine two authors, without any UI or confirmation. It's not official or documented, and may or may not do exactly what you expect. If things go wrong, there could be a lot of cleanup work to do. I wouldn't be surprised if LibraryThing developers made it stop working if it was overused or abused.
