Well, Sweden will have to wait. My brother (Arizona) and I (Connecticut) have decided to try to ride the Register's Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa (RAGBRAI) in July.

It's seven days, about 600 miles (mmm ... well, to honest, I don't know exactly how long it is) and about 10,000 cyclists. The nights are renown to be all-night partying.

They have so many entries that they do a lottery to select riders. Deadline for entries is April 1st.

Any other LibraryThingers going to ride this year? Maybe we could agree to meet at such and such bar on day n+3 or for breakfast at the third Girl Scout pancake stand in, say, North Liberty, Iowa(?).

If I pass the lottery and if I happen to find a way to post here (I will not be carrying my laptop and I don't own a cell-phone), I'll give you an update from the road. Otherwise I'll tell you about it when I get home.

Now, I have to get out on the bike and start training in earnest (daily rides on RAGBRAI are from about 60 miles to 80+ miles, with quite a few climbs (22,000 feet cumulative, but hopefully individual climbs will be not too steep)).

RAGBRAI is quite a scene and worth doing. The main challenge is the hot and humid Midwestern summer. And it will forever dispel one of the notion that Iowa is a flat place.

I am totally heartbroken! I have too many other things going on this summer to take the time off for RAGBRAI.

The kicker is my family lives not far from North Liberty - the route is actually close to my childhood stomping grounds this year, and I can't do it! Ahhhh! The pain!

I look forward to hearing from LibraryThingers biking RAGBRAI.

Well, the training is nearly over for me (900 miles since I last posted here). My brother (67 years old) and I (64 years old - this week) passed the RAGBRAI selection lottery and have been training our behinds off for the last several months.

Sometime this week, we both leave (he from Arizona, me from Connecticut) to drive to Iowa. A week from tomorrow, the actual RAGBRAI riding starts in earnest. The actual RAGBRAI partying, on the other hand, starts on Saturday, July 19, before the ride.

I'm really looking forward to seeing and riding with my brother (even if it is with over 10,000 other riders).

Wish me luck!

Good luck. Enjoy the time in the saddle, and may the p-fairy avoid you!

I'm looking forward to hearing how RAGBRAI was for all those who went. You all passed within 10 miles of my family's farm!
