Kid grows up in stables and has magic ability to bond with an animal

In this book I remember the kid growing up in the stables and being raised by the stablemaster who also has the magic ability to bond with animals. But it is a forbidden magic and the kid bonds with a wolf/dog and he has to hide it. The stablemaster even takes the wolf/dog away from him to break the bond but kid later finds out its still alive.
