Best of the Fantasy collection

I was wondering if anyone collects the Fantasy books and could recommend some? Is Nine Princes in Amber good as a stand-alone? How about Rise if Hyperion? I would prob read the series but wouldn’t buy a single in a series unless the book I bought worked as a stand-alone.

In general, what are the standouts in the collection?

I’ve read the whole collection, and there are definitely a few that don’t work as stand-alones. My top non-series books in the collection are probably Tigana, The Once and Future King, The Last Unicorn and Three Hearts Three Lions.

I have reviews (and a video) of the whole collection, including some warnings about cliffhanger endings here, if that helps: https://beautifulbooks.info/2019/10/easton-press-masterpieces-of-fantasy-series/

Rise of Endymion and Hyperion are part of the EP science fiction masterpieces collection.

Hyperion is one of the best science fiction novels I read. The sequel to it, Fall of Hyperion, is not nearly as good in my opinion. However, it does conclude what started in the first novel, so you you should read those two before Endymion.

>4 astropi: I really enjoyed reading all four books of the Hyperion Cantos. But the first, Hyperion, is the best.

Even better by Dan Simmons is Ilium and Olympos. What an interesting take on the siege of Troy transported into the future by nanotechnology enhanced future humans playing as the Greek gods. Absolutely fantastic ideas and a great story arc in the development of one particular character.

I’ve read all six of these books (Hyperion cantos and Ilium/Olympos) twice now and am certain I will read them again.

I wish I could find a reasonable price for used copies of EP’s Hyperion and Rise of Endymion.
