Repair damaged spine binding

A while ago I purchased a beautiful old Oliver Twist book. The glue of the spine however, had given up before I bought it. I think it might've just dried out over time? The cover of the book (it's a hardback) is still intact, but it's completely separated from the book. Also the first thread of that holds the first bundle of paper together is a lot looser than it should be. Does anyone know if/how I can repair this?

I've uploaded some photos here: https://imgur.com/a/DQcZRIL

Thank you!

Is the paper as dry and brown and crumbly as it looks in the photos? That first signature definitely needs to be resewn to the rest of the text block, and the condition of the paper makes a difference. If it's bad, some additional strengthening would be needed.

It's not the "glue of the spine" that's given up; it's the paper. It appears from the photos that the case was attached to the text block by the endsheets, which have crumbled.

This is definitely fixable. Whether you can do it depends on your bookbinding skills. If you don't know bookbinding, but have decent hand skills, there are some tutorials online.

If it's a particularly valuable book, though, you might want to find a bookbinder.

Thank you for your help! The pages itself are still strong, but the paper at the spine is definitely browned and dry. I'm not experienced with bookbinding, but I do have some decent DIY skills. Not sure how valueble the book itself is, so I shall find someone who does. I picked it up for €5 euros, but that might be due to the crumbling binding & that it's not in English.

Would you have any turorial recommendations? I'm still pretty new to the field.

Thanks again!

Here are a couple of videos.

The first is reattaching a loose signature; you need to do this before reattaching the cover to the textblock, and the second shows how to reattach the cover.

I wouldn't do these on a particularly valuable book, but if you only paid €5 for it, that probably doesn't apply.
