The most important remaining place for those who wish to follow in the footsteps of Jane Austen is the house or cottage in Chawton, Hampshire where she lived from 1809 to shortly before her death in 1817. The house is usually open to the public but is at present closed due to the Coronoavirus outbreak in the UK.
When Jane moved to Chawton in 1809 she was an unpublished writer but by the time she left the house for the last time in 1817 four of her major novels had been published. These were Sense & Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Mansfield Park and Emma. Her two remaining major novels were to be published in December 1817 within six months of her death. All these novels were formally published in London but they were sent there from Chawton. Most of Mansfield Park and Emma are thought to have been written at Chawton. We know that Jane radically revised Pride & Prejudice at Chawton but we do not know to what extent the other early novels were revised.
