Cheap sweet wines

Okay, I admit, I do not have a sophisticated wine palate.

In the beginning, Boone's Farm Strawberry Hill was the bottle of choice. I thought I had moved up a bit with Blue Nun and stayed there till it was no longer to be found. I would always search in the German section for Liebfraumilch ("little mother's milk"), but rarely finding it. Pleased to discover Peach Moscata in recent years.

I did recently stumble upon a pricier bottle of Blue Nun. It tastes a bit different than what I remember, so looked it up:

moving it towards a boring Riesling.

Not only have they changed the formulation, I find the brand has been the butt of jokes, especially in English comedy.

Huh!
Thankfully, I'm old enough now not to care one little bit.

A splash of blackberry cordial improved my glass this evening.

We took a wine tasting class at Johnson and Wales. What I came away with is that if it’s at least 13% alcohol it’s pretty good no matter the price.

Rodney: How do you know if a wine is vintage, Bung?
Bung: I give it the "lip test".
Rodney: What's that?
Bing: If it's wet enough to pass through the old lips, it's vintage.

Last year I did find two other Liebfraumilch brands. One was pretty awful, but the other was okay. Sadly, I don't recall which was which. The bottle I kept as a reminder was by maker Schmitt-Söhne.

I found one by Jacob Einig in my cellar recently. It is better than the Blue Nun, but not wonderful.

I've got a couple of Winking Owl bottles of something to try, but I'm going to pretty much stick with Arbor Mist in my old age.

Have you tried the Cupcake brand of wine? I found it to be too sweet for me, so it might be what you're looking for. Also, ice wines are very sweet so you might try one.

>6 mstrust: Try an ice wine by all means (the best of them are wonderful), but they are not likely to be cheap sweet wines.

Sweet, good, and cheap are a difficult combination in wine generally, although I admit I usually prefer dry wines. Vouvray is pretty great but not cheap (and probably best represents the ideal wine of Francois Rabelais), but other chenin blancs run the gamut of quality, and it's a lucky hit (though possible!) to find a cheap one that is good.

Edited to add: A decent riesling can be affordable, and I do like that with spicy food.
