Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand

940 History of Europe

I thoroughly enjoyed this book which follows the amazing life of Louis Zamperini from his childhood through death, with a focus on his time as a Japanese prisoner of war.

Louis Zamperini was a rambunctious child who was always finding trouble. He probably gave his mother the bulk of any gray hair she had! Fortunately his brother encouraged him in running for the school team and Louie really took to it. As his ability developed he set his sights on the Olympics and was generally expected to be the first man to break the 4- minute mile.

World War II, however, changed all that. Louie joined the Army Air Corps and served in the Pacific theater of war as a bombardier. On one mission his plane went down and he drifted with two other airmen across the Pacific for 47 days. The bulk of the story recounts the horrific experiences in the Japanese POW camps and the ongoing resilience of Louie and the other POWs.

The last few chapters deal with Louis' return home, his struggles and eventual resolutions. The book also followed some of his fellow prisoners and their journeys through camps and rescue as they intersected with Louie's life.

This book had so much tragedy (I've only heard the horror of the A- bomb, never the atrocities the Japanese committed against our soldiers), but also so much hope in the goodness some men were able to bring to the terror.

I read fiction much more easily than non-fiction, but this was an easy read as it was set as a story. And of course the intensity kept me intrigued. I highly recommend this book.

The Great Heresies by Hilaire Belloc

273 Doctrinal controversies and heresies in general church history

It took a long time to read this book, I actually first started 10 years ago, but I really enjoyed it.

Mr. Belloc begins simply by defining heresy in its generic sense: anything contrary and damaging to a complete system of thought. Thus if you take gravity out of Newtonian physics it messes up everything else in the system.

He then moves on to the more common understanding of religious heresy and covers five main heresies against original Christian belief, from the Arian denial of Christ's divinity to the modern (1937! yet still accurate) attack against anything Christian whatsoever.

Because Internet: The New Rules of Language by Gretchen McCulloch

302 Social Interaction

This book talks about the development of everyday user computer language and how it is impacting our communication. It was interesting to learn how many of the norms, all caps, all lower case, abbreviations, emojis, etc., have been determined simply by the technology available. Ms. McCulloch also explores the popularity of emojis and what purpose they serve.

I found it interesting that current text messages have become much more complex than early messages and texting is not destroying our ability with written language. Disturbing is how quickly meanings change, lol can be snarky and a period can be viewed as passive-aggressive!

Early in the book Ms. McCulloch discusses the development of language and rules. She believes grammar rules are elitist and compares them to telling a bird it's singing wrong. Unfortunately she is more accurate than she realizes. If a robin decides to ditch the "rules" of the mating song and do its own thing, other robins will not recognize the purpose of the communication and there will be no baby birds in that tree!

She sets up a false dichotomy between following the rules of language and being able to know/love another human being: "When we learn to write in ways that communicate our tone of voice, not just our mastery of rules, we learn to see writing not as a way to exert power, but of listening to each other." It's hard to communicate a tone of voice to someone else if we have no agreed upon set of meaning for the words, punctuation, gestures, etc. we are using. Just look at the trouble when we use an innocent gesture with a whole different meaning in a different country! It's interesting that while she puts down our current rules as elitist, she then goes on to talk about the importance of agreed upon meaning for our developing tech-based language, in other words, rules. So the question is whether our language rules will follow the structure of established languages and educated "editors" or the ever- changing whims of mob rule.

When in French by Lauren Collins

448 Standard French usage (Prescriptive linguistics)

With this book I have now read in all 10 classes!

Madame Collins was an American working in London when she fell in love with a French man. They lived in Geneva for his job and as she realized how much she was missing in the present, communication with her in- laws and neighbors, and how much she would miss in the future as their children grew up speaking French, Madame Collins decided to actively learn the language.

This book chronicles the personal intricacies of a relationship conducted in second languages, interspersed with a multitude of information on the study of language, the French and English languages, how languages shape us, etc.

I particularly enjoyed her evolution of thought as she became fluent in French. A very enjoyable book.

The Monk of Mokha by Dave Eggers

338 Economics - Production

This is the story of Mukhtar Alkhanshali's quest to bring Yemeni coffee to the US market. He grew up in San Francisco, the son of Yemeni immigrants, and was floundering after high school, trying to earn enough money to attend college. In an almost mystical experience, he felt a calling to bring the coffee of his ancestors from the land of its birth to our modern American coffee houses. We follow the development of his dream from a less than professional business plan through finding backers to his treks through Yemen searching out coffee growers willing to change their methods to supply a superior product. The last portion of the book details his frantic escape from Yemen, with his coffee samples!, in the wake of the emerging war.

I enjoyed learning more about the tree to coffee shop portion of the coffee process and getting a glimpse of Yemeni life before and during the war. I am NOT an entrepreneur and was amazed at this young man's dedication to his dream and how quickly he was able to bring it to fruition. I was also impressed with how quickly he thought on his feet while in Yemen. An enjoyable read.

The Brothers Karamazov by Fyodor Dostoyevsky

891 East Indo-European and Celtic literature

I enjoyed this book and am glad I finally read it. At times I had to force myself to read because it did not go as lightly and quickly as a modern mystery. Not only is my copy 700 pages of small print, but the characters are deeply developed and there is a lot more happening than just the action. I would like to better understand how two long, well-written books can read so differently.

The Blue Tattoo: The Life of Olive Oatman by Margot Mifflin

979 Great Basin & Pacific Slope region of United States

Olive Oatman was a young Mormon girl traveling west with her family in 1851 when they were attacked and most of the family killed by local Indians. Olive and one sister were taken prisoner. Many books have been written about Olive's experience, or sounds like many more fantasy than truth. Ms. Mifflin is trying to set the record straight with research and confirmable facts.

This was a fascinating story and interesting for the historical perspective.

Surviving Death by Leslie Kean

129 Origin and destiny of individual souls

Ms. Kean researched the evidence available for life after death, from children's tales of their "life before this life" to mediums, seances and psychokinesis. She sought the most factual and provable sources available, often visiting families, researchers and mediums herself to confirm what she had read. There were no stories of "I was Marie Antoinette" or Ghengis Khan, only those with so much confirming detail or rigorous guards against chicanery that they defy disbelief.

Some of the evidence appears contrary to my Christian faith, but certainly provides food for thought. I was most amused by statements that we might need to rethink our common beliefs and allow for the possibility of continuing existence after death. Belief in existence after death has been the norm for millennia across all cultures. It is only modern western scientific thought that has rejected it!

1,000 Books to Read Before You Die by James Mustich

011 Bibliographies

I did not read this book cover to cover, but dipped in at many places and copied the list in my own database for future reference. I really liked that Mr. Mustich gave a single phrase synopsis of each book as well as a fuller description including a snippet of the writing. I wish I had more hours in the day and nothing to do just so I could read the multitude of fascinating books he lists. He includes a fascinating variety of books across topics and centuries

Highly recommend

Wild by Cheryl Strayed

917.9

Ms. Strayed hiked over 1000 miles alone on the Pacific Crest Trail. This tells of both her physical and mental journeys during this time. I'm glad she found the healing she did, but I was expecting more from this book.

I am always saddened when people approach marriage as a ball and chain, a limit on their freedoms, rather than a partnership that can bring both members to even greater heights. I completely cannot relate to her divorcing her husband (no apparent abuse from her descriptions) while saying she still loves him and will always consider herself married to him in her heart. Many of her views I could not relate to.

The book is inspiring for stretching beyond my current comfort zone, thinking about possible challenges for myself. 3/5

The Death of Woman Wang by Jonathan D. Spence

China, Shantung province

Professor Spence uses three primary sources to weave together a glimpse of T'an-ch'eng county in seventeenth century China. The book begins with some general history of the wars, rebellions, brigands and natural catastrophes that plagued the country throughout the century and then focuses on specific events between 1668 and 1672.

The Local History of T'an-ch'eng was compiled in 1673 and thus had fresh memories and first-hand experience for the narrated events. Huang Liu-hung, the county magistrate from 1670 -1672 authored A Complete Book Concerning Happiness and Benevolence, "a personal memoir and handbook on the office of magistrate." P'u Sung-ling, an "essayist, short-story writer and dramatist," lived in bordering Tzu-ch'uan country and traveled through T'an-ch'eng in our focus time, so professor Spence included excerpts from his work to round out the more human aspects of daily life in the poor county.

Wow! Life was rough! The corruption, lawlessness, tax evasion make our current American protagonists look like children at play. Today's poor may not be able to hire the best lawyers, but most of our daily life is protected by even-handed laws. My wealthy neighbor can't keep all the proceeds of his work, yet claim it was mine for tax purposes. A person can't just move into my house and get by with it because the police don't want to tangle with his thugs.

I also appreciate the respect for women in our society. My husband can't sell me as a slave, concubine or prostitute for any reason, let alone he needs more gambling money! While widows did have some rights, the law meant to protect them actually had the opposite effect and many just quit fighting.

I really enjoyed this book for the glimpse into another time and culture. As my husband said, it makes you rethink the trauma of not getting data when the wind is wrong!

So Many Books, So Little Time by Sara Nelson

028.9

With this quick start I should change my ticket counter to a hare. Precisely because it looks good out of the gate, but probably won't last!

This is my 000s book to start the year and a much better option than Adventures in Excel 2003! Ms. Nelson works in the publishing business and is an avid reader. She had noticed how often her reading intersected with her life and decided to document her reading for one year with a goal of one book written AND reviewed per week. I enjoyed how her she wove together the story of her reading choices, the books that chose her and the flow of her life during this year.

I enjoy reading. For me it's escaping when I'm struggling with something and/ or vacationing in other places and lives. I joined several challenges here last year to encourage myself to read all those books that are never quite as interesting once I see a new mystery that piques my interest. And also to have a more well-rounded reading diet. As I entered the fray it made me think about what's important in life and where I should be spending my energies. I want my reading to enhance my life, not take over my life. At the end of the book Ms. Nelson suddenly finds herself on vacation without a book. "For once I even could see the wisdom in (my husband's) response... maybe for just a little while I didn't need to read books that would explicate my life. I could just live it."

Bravo! I want to read for the pleasure of seeing a bigger world, sometimes real, sometimes imaginary. But I want to make sure I'm not so busy with the stories of other people's lives that I forget to live my own story.

Pop Goes the Weasel The Secret Meanings of Nursery Rhymes by Albert Jack

398.809

This fun book explored the origins of a wide variety of our favorite childhood rhymes and a few songs. The author seems to have done a good deal of research despite limited sources for some of the rhymes. He gives multiple theories where he found them, in addition to historical facts that support or refute the theory. Most were interesting, some made a lot of sense, some seemed to have gaping holes in the logic. All in all this was an enjoyable light read.

The Endless Steppe by Esther Hautzig

940. WWII - Russia - Siberia

World War II had atrocities beyond count. This is the true story of a young Polish girl whose family was deported to Russia for being "capitalists." It is interesting to hear from her child's point of view. Just like today, she wanted to fit in with the other children, even as a deportee. When they were finally able to return to Poland, she begged to stay because she had found her place even in exile.

Nice, refreshing, happy are not the appropriate words for a story of the inhumanity of one people to another, but I have long been frustrated with the single view of the war. What Hitler did to the Jewish people was beyond words. Sadly he also did this to multiple other groups who are never mentioned. In Russia Stalin committed even more atrocities that are seldom part of the narrative. I believe all the groups that suffered should be acknowledged and this book helps fill that gap.

Phineas Gage by John Fleischman

617.2

Many have this under 362 as social problems, some under 616.8 diseases and mental disorders. I felt it goes well under 617.2, medicine and health- surgery- results of wounds and injuries.

Phineas Gage was a valued employee of the railroad. One day, while preparing a blast hole, he accidently dropped the rod. It fell in the hole, set of the charge and blasted back out, straight through Mr. Gage's head. The man walked back to town, talked to people and lived another 11 years. He was a medical marvel. This book looks at both his life after the accident and the medical field following his story, trying to understand the functions of the brain.

St. Augustine: The Giants of Philosophy by Robert J. O'Connell

189.2

This was a nice brief introduction to St. Augustine of Hippo. According to this book, his mother Monica could rival the most ambitious east- coast socialites in her desires (and methods!) for her son.

I only realized in looking up the info for documenting this, that it was read by Charlton Heston. Worth the "read" just to hear his voice!

The Journey Home: by Phillip Berman

155

Enjoyable exploration of common features of the near death experience and its similarity to mystical experiences throughout the ages. I always sigh when the scientists (some of whom the author quoted) say "Wow! We just discovered..." something my Catholic faith has been saying for almost 2000 years. It's interesting to see how the experience can be filtered through the different individuals' life experiences and beliefs, but at core still not contradict each other. This book also made me wonder how often we misinterpret each other based on a different understanding of very specific words.

Waste-Free Kitchen Handbook by Dana Gunders

2.5 The idea is good, the execution left a lot to be desired. I felt like the book jumped all over the place; we'd have three sentences on one topic, then jump to something else. The best part was the directory, well- researched, which gave freshness, storage and freezing information individually for almost every food you could think of. The rest could have been better organized and much better fleshed out.

The Next Civil War

An artful blend of fact, fantasy and innuendo. George Floyd's death was fact, the sheriff at the bridge was fiction, but in between was very blurry fear-mongering.

One example regarding terrorism in America: he spoke for a few minutes about right wing terrorists. He spoke for a minute about FAR left terrorists. He mentioned thousands of people have died from terrorist attacks, but only 22 from far left attacks. Since he's never mentioned anything about 9/11, the Boston marathon, etc. and his book is completely focused on the tension between left and right, this left the impression that the remaining thousands of deaths are from right wing attacks. In fact, according to the all-knowing Wikipedia, of the 3,781 US soil deaths attributed to terrorism from 1970 to 2017, just shy of 2,850 were from the 9/11 attacks.

I was hoping he'd go more deeply into the sources of division, fairly presenting each side's point of view, give a wide variety of scenarios. Nope, nada, just fear-mongering. I made it to 30% and couldn't go on.
