Was it a surprise that Amelia was in the boot?

I was surprised. Now that the guilt was setting in, I would have thought he’d let his daughter go rather than lock her up somewhere she could suffocate if he killed himself

I was surprised. I would have thought that he would have taken her to a family member instead of locking her up in the boot of the car.

I didn't know what to expect if he didn't intend taking the girl with him when he jumped.

I don't think he was thinking anything beyond just taking her away from the house. He didn't want to kill her or he would have killed her at the house...but it was like he just forgot about her after getting to the car.
