Did Alex do a good job on Barry in getting him to empathise with her? Any thoughts what she was up to?

Yes. She lied about her personal life to get him to relate to her and it worked. She wants to use him as an experiment but I still don't know why.

I still haven't worked out whether she has a specific goal in mind, ie a 'target' whom she wants killed, or is experimenting to test some sick theory of her own, or is doing this simply 'because she can'...?

she's very good at this - I think a lot of it is because she's out to prove just how "brilliant" she is and is doing this just because she can. Her prior case of manipulation was done so that she could inherit her parents' wealth - now, it's just done for "fun", I think.
