I'm Wild About Harry

So my categories this year will be simple, but instead of boring, I wanted to go back to having a fun thread.

I was thinking about the series that I love to return to time and again for different reasons and realized that three of them had a protagonist named Harry. This song came to mind. A little background on the song from Wikipedia "I'm Just Wild About Harry" is a song written in 1921 with lyrics by Noble Sissle and music by Eubie Blake for the Broadway show Shuffle Along.

"I'm Just Wild About Harry" was the most popular number of the production, which was the first financially successful Broadway play to have African-American writers and an all African-American cast. The song broke what had been a taboo against musical and stage depictions of romantic love between African-Americans.
The song has been covered by various artists and even featured in an episode of Downton Abbey.

My three Harrys are Harry Potter, Harry Hole, and Harry Dresden. From time to time I may feature another Harry for fun, but I'll stick to my three Harrys for my categories. Below are my favorite of each series.

I'm Roberta from the suburbs of Houston, Texas USA. I'm a nurse (and currently in nursing school working on my advanced degree.) Besides loving my Harrys, I love my dogs and of course, reading!

HARRY POTTER - REREADS

This series brought me lots of joy and comfort in my Mom's last years. We read it together and I love going back to it. For my rereads category I have chosen Harry Potter.

Definitely plan to listen to the entire series again with Stephen Fry narrating! It will be fun to listen to the British version.
Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone by J.K. Rowling
The Master and Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov last time I read the Burgin and Tiernan O'Conner translation. This time I will read the Pevear and Volokhonsky translation.

HARRY HOLE - CATCHING UP ON MY SERIES

This series jumped the shark a very long time ago, but I stick with it because I just can't quit Harry. He is ridiculous, but I feel the need to follow his capers. For my catching up on series I have chosen Harry Hole.

Depth of Winter by Craig Johnson - Longmire
Land of Wolves by Craig Johnson - Longmire
Knife by Jo Nesbo - Harry Hole

HARRY DRESDEN - SHINY NEW BOOKS

I had trouble getting into this series, but I'm glad I stuck to it. The payoff has been so worth it. Harry Dresden has matured in the ways that mattered. He has true friendships, a family and he is not afraid of fighting for what he believes in. He annoyed me greatly at first, but now I'm rooting for him. This isn't a new series, but the newest release is out in 2020 and we (fans) have been waiting for years. For shiny new books (new authors, new series - new books in old series will go elsewhere) I have chosen Harry Dresden.

Carrion Comfort by Dan Simmons - ScaredyKIT
Ross Poldark by Winston Graham - group read
Mrs. Dalloway by Virginia Woolf - group read
Every Dead Thing by John Connolly - shared read with Kim

NOS4A2 by Joe Hill
Interview with the Vampire by Anne Rice

Hi Ro! I was going to guess that you are wild about Prince Harry - or Harry Connick Jr. but after visiting Lisa's thread now I am thinking Harry Dresden and Harry Hole! Can't wait to see!

>24 Crazymamie: Welcome back to LT Mamie. I've been known to be scarce myself. I will take note of your audio recommendation of Harry Bosch. Thank you!

>27 karenmarie: I don't know yet that I will have strong feelings about Stephen Fry vs Jim Dale. I listened to Jim Dale first so that is the HP that I have in my brain. I love Stephen Fry's narration of anything. I'm early in on the first book and I do love the Fry narration, but I can already tell you that I prefer Dale's Hagrid. I need to keep a list now that I think about it. ;-)

I don't do direct patient care anymore so I'm safer than most of my colleagues. I pray for them everyday. I'm terrified every time I have to go out as my aunt Dora has lung disease and she is 75.

I'm okay for a couple of weeks, but if it drags on beyond that, I could be in trouble. Did manage to score the second to last thermometer at CVS for my brother (then in typical librarian fashion, overheard someone else asking for one and directed her to the last one).

Will say a prayer for you and Aunt Dora.

My Dad died on last Wednesday. It wasn't unexpected. He had been in hospice since August for end stage heart failure. He also had dementia, which made the care for him difficult. My brother and SIL took incredible care of him. I am in awe of them. Also, I am very thankful. I did not go to be with him as it came quickly when he made a downturn. My brother didn't realize it would be this quick, but decided since we are still isolating for me to stay home. I take care of my 75 year old aunt who is my brother's godmother so we agreed to each stay put. It has been very strange and sad. My Dad was cremated per his wishes and my brother decided to postpone his memorial for August on Dad's birthday in the hopes that we will be able to have a safe, larger gathering at that time.

Thank you all so much for your kind words and thoughts. I've been busy working and trying to catch up with school. I live in TX so our COVID numbers are rising again. This is causing me a great deal of anxiety. I'm trying to cope as best as I can, but a lot of the things I would like in order to make my life easier are near impossible during quarantine. I'm still working, which is it's own stress, but I'm quarantining the rest of the time. I am seeing a grief counselor so at least that has been helpful.

>73 lkernagh: Thank you Lori.

>74 Berly: Thanks Kim. We are going to postpone Dad's memorial until next year. It's such a mess here in Texas with COVID. I'm in the Houston area so you can just imagine. My family is from the border so it is a huge mess there since neither side is closing the border. (Mexico closed the border in Arizona, but not Texas). I suspect like in the US, it is a state decision and many people own businesses or rely on businesses on both sides of the border. The only positive thing from this is that I am behind on school so not traveling will give me time to complete my courses and earn my BSN by the end of August.

By the way, is it okay to postpone our shared read of Dark Hollow until September? I'm hyper focused on school right now. That is when not at work pulling my hair out about COVID!

The weather is not great here. Lot of flooding, but not by me. Near me, but I've missed it. Let's see what the next 36 hours brings. I'm still heartbroken about Hurricane Laura. We dodged a disaster. The people in Louisiana are having a rough go of it. Especially in Lake Charles where it hit really hard and there has been little to no coverage of it.

>89 Berly: Howdy Kim! I agree.

This is what I said in the audiobook thread about Dark Hollow. I finished up Dark Hollow by John Connolly. I love the supporting characters. Not so sure about the main character, but I suspect he will grow as the series progresses. It's really dark and violent. I used to love this, but lately not so much. There is a supernatural element to it. It's not the main focus of the series, but it is definitely there. I'll think about if I want to proceed. In the meantime, on to other books.

I'll probably listen to another one, as one of my besties tells me the series gets better and better. Not this month though! LOL
