Herbert Blomstedt Conducts Bach and Mendelssohn.

Penny Gore this week introduces performances by the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra and Choir recorded at the Baltic Sea Festival in Stockholm selection. Today, nonogenarian Herbert Blomstedt conducts a joyous solo cantata by Bach and Mendelssohn's Lobgesang. Bach wrote most of his cantatas in Leipzig and Jauchzet Gott in allen Landen, with its jovial soprano and trumpet parts, really is true to its title, which translates as `Shout for joy to God in all lands". Over 100 years later in the same city, Mendelssohn wrote Lobgesang, another work teeming with infectious joy, for the 400th anniversary of the invention of printing. Herbert Blomstedt, yet another former Leipzig resident, puts all of his experience and skill to realizing this optimistic, life-affirming music. Bach: Jauchzet Gott in allen Landen, BWV 51, cantata. John Butt is one of the most respected Bach specialists of today, both as a performer and a scholar. Having recorded the St John Passion in a liturgical context, he brings his expertise to the BBC National Orchestra and Chorus of Wales in this dramatic and intimate setting of the Gospel story. Penny Gore introduces the first of four programmes featuring music performed by Nordic ensembles, beginning with symphonies by Sibelius and Mahler, who met in 1907 and completely disagreed about what a symphony should be. That contrast is perfectly caught today in Sibelius's Seventh Symphony from Oslo and Mahler's Third in an archive highlight from the 2010 Baltic Sea Festival in Stockholm, coupled with a new work by Swedish composer Britta Bystrom.
