Is there a way to group patrons/borrowers in categories?
eg A school library needs to group the pupil borrowers into their class groups and the teachers into their own group?
It would also be good to allow different "due date" periods for groups, and different borrowing limits for groups
I am assisting a new primary school get their library system up and going and these features would be very helpful.

Unfortunately, TinyCat doesn't allow for separate groups/permissions for admins or patrons.

That said, you can at least create your own custom patron field (from your TinyCat Admin's Patrons Settings: https://www.librarycat.org/admin/settings/patronsettings) called "Category" or "Group" for example, entering "student" or "teacher" as needed for each patron account so you have them recorded properly. This would allow you to sort by that field from your Patrons page (https://www.librarycat.org/admin/patrons) or view what type of account someone has from the patron account or a patron export. I hope this helps.

kristilabrie - Thanks for the answer. I will try this. We are at a stage where we are looking at all the options of TinyCat before launching into capturing all the books and patrons. Trying to avoid having to backtrack and redo things. I'm running a test library at present which we'll convert for the school to take over as soon as we've clarified some of these issues.

For our school library, i have listed students class before name as part of their patron name. Say the student, James Ngo is a in Year 1 - the patron name is Year 1, James Ngo. This way all the Year 1s are listed together. If there are multiple classes in that cohort, i will provide the necessary filters eg. if in school classes are distinguished by certain names, i will use the acronymn eg. Year 1 Respect vs Year 1 Knowledge = Y1R, Y1K followed by the names of the students. Everything will be listed alphabetically.

Hi SAIGONSTAR, just wondering if you then need to update the patron name each year for all students? So when James Ngo moves from year 1 to year 2 you update the record accordingly?

I was thinking of adding the year of starting school to the student name so they could sorted accordingly without needing to be updated annually. But there may be some drawback to this which I haven't considered!

>5 stroudgreenschool: Just keep in mind that, if you ever wish to edit the starting year out of the patrons' names, you won't be able to do so quickly by running a patron export/import (with the changes). Name changes (and patron barcode changes) must be done manually.* All other edits for patron data can be run using patron export/import, if it saves time.

*Patron imports use the patron name and barcode/ID to import changes to existing patrons in TinyCat, so those two fields must be kept the same for mass updates—otherwise a new patron will get added to the system if either of those fields are changed for an existing patron.

>5 stroudgreenschool: stroudgreenschool: Sorry for the late reply. Yes i manually update the students by classes starting with those at the highest level first as otherwise you have say, last year's Year 1s mixed up with this year's Year 1s. We have a small school of under 200 students so its manageable for now.

My library is for my what will be my classroom library. I am however already working in a school permanently and the staff I work with will borrow a book I have from time to time. So for the User ID/Barcode field
I entered TCH--- followed by a number to identify them separately. That way I know who has or will be borrowing a book from fellow teachers or any other staff member.

I am going to do the same with students by placing a STU--- in that field followed by a number. I went to Setting, Patrons and Clicked Add field. Named it Teacher, my students I will put my name in there. If a student from another class wats to borrow a book then I would their teachers name.

This gives me the ability to sort by Category of who has a book TCH or STU and then also by teacher should I need to talk to that student about returning a book if they have had it a long time.
