Forgotten title

A few years ago i read a book where a boy had to confess his sins so a lady made this small doll and cursed it. It tried to kill the boy and all the time was growing bigger and bigger as it chased him. The doll chased him through town in a van. It got on the boat the boy was trying to escape on. I also remember almost towards the end of the book the boy had gotten an apartment and tried to hide from the doll but the doll found him and tried to get in. I remember the boy locking himself inside i think the bedroom. I cant remember what he said, but when he finally heard the noise stop and opemed the door the doll had shrunk back to normal size... please help
