Sorry if this is already answered somewhere else - newbie alert! I have multiple copies of individual titles that I'd like to add to our collection, but can't figure out how to add more than one barcode/copy to a record. Do we have to add duplicate records: one for each copy? If so, how do we designate the copy number/duplicate status? Thanks!

Yes, you have to add each one separately. I'll let someone else help you with the other question.

>1 toledobuddhist: >2 PhaedraB: is correct! You'll need to catalog each copy separately.
As for designating each copy, I know many libraries that indicate which copy is which by editing the Title of their record (e.g. "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone - Copy 1 of 2", etc.), but you can also utilize the "Barcode" field for your library, which will ensure that each individual record in your library has its own unique barcode number. Check out LT's blog post on our Barcode Support feature (http://blog.librarything.com/main/2015/06/new-feature-barcode-support/), and let me know if you have any further questions.

Our books are not barcoded, so that is not an issue. In LibraryThing, I have indicated that there are 3 copies of a specific title, but there is not way to know that when you look at the record in TinyCat. Is there an easy way to copy the bib record for the title? I can add "copy 1," "copy 2," etc., to the title fields, but I'm just wondering how to duplicate the records in TinyCat. Do I have to use "Add Books" in LT, and add each one, along with our local tags. Seems that there should be a way to create a duplicate record. Thanks!

Ah, thank you. Do you know if there is any easy way to identify the books for which we have indicated multiple copies in LT? Or do I have to go through every bib record to see where we have more than one copy?

St_Nicholas_Library (#7):
You can add "Copies" as a column in one of your catalog views (in LibraryThing, not in TinyCat), and sort by it. I don't know whether it's possible to do this in TinyCat.

>7 St_Nicholas_Library: For checking multiple copies of books in/out, many libraries use the "Barcode" field and implement a barcode system, so they can scan/look up the exact barcode/copy of the book they're checking in or out. Some libraries do indicate the number of copy in the title, so they can delineate each copy easily from the Check in/out page. You may prefer to do this. (We don't yet have copies management on TC/LT for lending, so showing the number of copies—even if you could—wouldn't help here, I'm afraid.) I hope this helps!

We do barcode but also add "Copy 2" or another copy # to the call # field so it is quick and easy to see.

Thanks to everyone who replied! We aren't barcoding yet, but may in the future. I think I'll add "c. 2" in the title field for now. Too bad that you can't copy a record . . .

We've developed a system that gives each individual book its own ID #, which is composed of the date of acquisition (last 2 digits of yr and month) and a number, so for example a new book added today would be 1910 - 071, meaning year 2019, month of October, and 71 st book since the new school year. That way each book is uniquely identified without needing the barcode, we know automatically when it was catalogued, and we know how many new books we have added to the collection at the end of the school year. It has served us well because we are cataloging not only new books but older books from the pre-existing collection.

Since I need to have 2 separate records in TinyCat for 2 copies of a book, I was wondering if there is any way to search our records in LibraryThing to find all of those for which there are multiple copies. I think I asked this several years ago, but was hoping there might have been an update that would at least allow us to find titles we need to duplicate. Thanks!

This is the same answer Lorax and I gave you in >8 MarthaJeanne: and >9 lorax: two years ago.
