In addition to Rashomon and Floating Weeds, I forgot she was in one of Kenji Mizoguchi's greatest films, Ugetsu, playing the mysterious woman with whom the potter has a dalliance that goes on for some time. In both Rashomon and Ugetsu she wears period make-up which makes her look scary; check out Floating Weeds for a glimpse of her in a modern setting (1959), where to me her beauty is comparable to the film noir heroines of the 40's and 50's.

James R. Oestreich. NYT, 07/03/2022: Music’s Towering Intellectual, With an Appetite for Trouble.

"While researching Russian composers for his doctorate — at a time when scholars largely dismissed them as peripheral figures — Mr. Taruskin realized how 19th-century politics had insidiously shaped the classical canon. It was no coincidence, he forcefully argued, that Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven were so well-regarded: Their popularity and acclaim represented the aftereffects of a long-unacknowledged, and deeply rooted, German nationalist ideology."

"The Oxford History of Western Music, published in 2005, grew out of Mr. Taruskin’s undergraduate lectures at Berkeley and his dissatisfaction with textbooks that presented a parade of unassailable masterpieces. In more than 4,000 pages, he wove intricate analyses alongside rich contextualization, revealing musical history as a fraught terrain of argumentation, politics, and power."

Clu Gulager, 1928-2022. The name I remember from childhood; incorrectly associated in my memory with the Western TV series Hotel de Paree. Learned that Clu was originally a nickname; he was born William Martin Gulager in Oklahoma, where clu-clu was the regional term for the (bird) martin. He appeared as a supporting character in TV & movies, & was also a film teacher, specializing in horror movies; his son John Gulager is a horror movie director. He was someone you saw in so many movies & TV shows, but maybe never registered: the second hitman (to Lee Marvin's numero uno) in the Don Siegal movie The Killers. As a one-off supporting actor in 50's TV dramas: The Untouchables -- Playhouse 90 -- Have Gun Will Travel. Continuing in the 60's & 70's as a one-off on TV series: The Line Up -- The Rebel -- The Defenders. Finally a continuing role as Billy the Kid in The Tall Man but continuing as a one-off in -- Dr. Kildare -- Wagon Train -- Bonanza -- Mannix --Kung Fu -- Ironside. A five year run as Emmett Ryker in The Virginian, but continuing as a one-off in McCloud -- The Streets of San Francisco -- Barnaby Jones -- Hawaii Five-0. In the 80's: Quincy M.E. -- CHiPs -- Knight Rider -- Magnum P.I. -- Murder She Wrote -- MacGyver. The 90's: Walker Texas Ranger -- Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman.

Impossible to name them all; Gulager, reminiscent of Zelig, seems to have embodied the history of network TV. Fittingly, director, writer, & trivia expert Quentin Tarantino gave Gulager his last bit part as (sardonical casting?) bookstore owner in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
