Not a mystery, but one that has to do with many mysteries - A is for Arsenic: the Poisons of Agatha Christie. With her advanced training in pharmacology, Christie used poisons as weapon a lot and this book takes you through many of them, in alphabetical order, and describes how they kill, how Christie used them in fiction and how murderers used them in real life. I'm up to C is for Cyanide.

I just got my long-awaited library hold of Past Tense, the latest Jack Reacher. It's proving to be a fast read as usual.

Quiller KGB by Adam Hall. Released in 1989, prior to the fall of the Berlin Wall (which it predicts), the book and the author are inadvertently back in the news. The 13th outing for this ultimate British spy.

I just finished An Elderly Lady is Up to No Good by Helene Tursten, a five-story collection about a little old lady who solves problems in an unorthodox manner. I found it to be an oddly charming little book and I’m looking forward to trying more from this author.

Started the new year by reading the two latest Michael Connelly books - The late show and Dark sacred Night. Highly recommended. I like the new protagonist Connelly has introduced, Ballard.

Now I am working my way through Leif G W Persson Johansson and Jarnebring series - I discovered the first three books had been translated a long time ago, and ordered from the library. Currently re-reading Between summer’s longing and winter’s end.

I have just finished Transcription by Kate Atkinson. I liked it quite a bit particularly Atkinson's wit.

I am going to follow up by reading Beneath the Bleeding by Val McDermid. She's a favourite author but it's been quite a while since I read anything by her.

Leverage In Death by JD Robb
#47 In Death series
4 1/2 ⭐️

This is #47 of the In Death series. Paul Rohan a dedicated husband, father and employee was coerced into becoming suicide bomber, to save his wife and daughter. The explosion happened at a merger meeting of the airline he worked for and a low cost competitor. The stocks for the companies dropped instantly. When the survivors said the merger was still on, the stocks rose once again. Lt. Eve Dallas and her partner Det. Delia Peabody were called to the scene. It seemed an impossibility that 12 people died just because of some greedy souls wanted stock leverage. Why? Dallas, Peabody and Roark, a civilian consultant and Eve’s gorgeous talented husband all began the search for the killers. Their search took the through bomb fragments, high stake leveraged buying, and even to the
local art scene all while tracking the greedy killers. It was a fast action thriller with wonderful dialogue. It was different, in a good way, from many of it’s prequels, in that the killers were not readily apparent from the beginning of the book.

Service of All the Dead by Colin Dexter. Morse #4. An older Shaun Evans is my mental picture, as I was in a media desert during the original TV series.

Currently in crime fiction I'm reading a historical crime novel: The Harper's Quine, by Pat McIntosh.

I finished The Chalk Circle Man - while a very good mystery, I missed the opportunity to solve the case before the detective. Adamsberg's ability as a detective rests primarily on his instinct.

I just finished The Invisible Worm by Margaret Millar. It was her first novel, and while it wasn't perfect, it was interesting enough that I think I'll keep reading her stuff.

The Grilling Season by Diane Mott Davidson
3 *

Goldy Schultz, owner of Goldilocks catering in Aspen Meadow, Colorado, has a big problem. Her abusive ex-husbandJohn Richard Korman, aka The Jerk, has been arrested for the murder of an executive of the HMO where he works as an OBGYN Doctor. He had been dating the executive. Goldy’s son wants Goldy to help prove his dad is innocent. The problem is that Goldy is a witness; she found the body, and as such cannot interfere. Also, a friend of hers is suing John Richard and the HMO for negligence. Meanwhile Goldy has catering to do: a hockey party and a Babsie Doll convention. Is John Richard innocent, and what can she do to clear him? It’s all a twisted mess.

This was a fair read. Not was much action or much in the way of humor. I enjoy a bit of humor, but there was little. There was too much of Goldy mulling the case over and over. It became tedious. On to the next.

Just read two great thrillers back to back. Out of the Dark by Gregg Hurwitz is the latest Orphan X novel and I think it is the best one yet. Orphan X is a mix of Jack Reacher, James Bond and a little bit of John Wick. I really like this series.

I also finished The Lost Man by Jane Harper and it is another standout. Three books into her career and she is one of my favorite authors. I love the Australian setting and she is fantastic with both plot and characters. There are so many good thriller writers from Australia right now it's ridiculous.
