Could Theo’s background have led to his death?

Yes because he was poor and Latino. He may have been bullied, pressured, looked down on by some of the other kids. Maybe they dared Theo to do something that got him hurt.

I don't know.
Hazing that went too far?
Just plain bullying?
Joe concerned at his brother's infatuation with Theo? (Or am I reading too much into all this talk of closeness between the roommates?)

Ethnic Scholarship students probably have a lot more trouble fitting in.

probably as he may not have been willing to stand up to the other students and was thus more likely to be bullied or pressured into taking chances
